Hello,

Sorry if this question sounds dumb but I actually did my research and all I could find was
https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-install-the-exfat-driver-without-updating-2-x.505176/
and
https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-...tch-console-on-any-ofw-without-update.505182/
or threads that asked a question about exFAT update and were answered by a link to one of these, such as
https://gbatemp.net/threads/best-way-to-get-exfat-working-on-switch.508487/
However none of these threads answer my question:

So, my Switch is currently on 4.0.1 and I need exFAT support.

Obviously the right solution is not to connect to the internet and update to 5.1.0 (though I agree, that brings exFAT support). A solution given by the above links is to hack a lot of stuff to get the exFAT update from a cart dump and put it on the Switch. And a potential third solution I thought about but saw mentioned nowhere (explicitly) is: if that Switch were updated to 4.1.0 using a cart (Kirby Star Allies, from what I gathered), would it get exFAT support?

I guess the answer would be yes. But I legitimately have no clue, especially since then I don't understand why guides would tell people to use the hacky way using Bayonetta 2 on 4.0.1 when they could just use Kirby Star Allies to update. And I don't really want to risk updating to 4.1.0 for no reason even if 4.0.1 and 4.1.0 are supposedly in the same boat when it comes to hacks...

(Not posted in a hacking part of the forum because technically, the question is not about hacks at all, on the contrary it tries to avoid them.)

Its a separate update that needs to be downloaded from nintendo. There is a way to install the exfat update without updating on this website.

Yes OP linked to them, but we were guessing(probably wrongly) that because in those methods exfat drivers are extracted from some cartridge, maybe just using the same cartridges could be enough to trigger the exfat update without the guide.

For example, in that list there's skyrim with 3.0.1 update and exfat included, the guide says to use the method to extract exfat files, but couldn't i insert skyrim in the console and just update to exfat and 3.0.1?

Nope, you will need to either flash it or update to latest with a exfat sd card in.

The answer is no. While the update on the cart contains the exFAT files, it will only install them if you already had the exFAT files on your Switch, otherwise it updates your OS without the exFAT.

Can't this update be packaged together as an installer of sorts via homebrew? Fuck if I know.
I'd be interested too. I'm not in a hurry though so I can wait and see. Maybe for example when Atmosphere comes out and supports emuNAND, just updating emuNAND would bring exFAT support.

Anyways, thanks everyone for the answers, I understand now why it's not possible to just use a cart to get that update.

I hope that too however most likely the console can't just read ExFat from RCM without the update, that would make atmosphere to not boot either as it would not read the M-SD ExFat, but no idea...

I updated, installed a reed switch, made my phone into a dongle along with my pc and ordered a SX license. Transferred about fifteen games. Fuck the waiting game. I'll still buy games if I feel like I want DLC or something because I can't be bothered to mess with devmenu and layeredfs. Looks like such a hassle.
