Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger IX Announced for Nintendo Switch

Inti Creates recently announced Gunvolt Cronicles: Luminous Avenger IX, the next game in the Azure Striker Gunvolt series at the BitSummit 2018. The game stars the anti hero of the series Copen, in what seems to be set in a earlier time before the events of the first game. Anyone who has played Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will instantly recognize his gameplay and how much different it is to Gunvolt. If you have yet to try the previous games in the series, you can do so by purchasing Azure Striker Gunvolt Striker Pack for both Nintendo 3DS and Switch which has both first and second games available in one purchase to try before this game becomes available. Gunvolt Cronicles: Luminous Avenger IX is currently in development.

Not to mention that ASG1 and 2 on Switch run at 60fps which makes the experience even better. Still, I wouldn't mind a 3DS version of the new game if it can reach reach more people.

you clearly havent tried making a game in your life, first of all, ASG was never truly 2D, it always used 3D effects for a variety of things, specially with the shit around copen during combat, speaking of which, having so much stuff, with such high res sprites and at a mostly stable 60FPS is FEAT of optimization, the 3DS is not the most powerful system, specially since its hardware is optimized for fast 3D graphics (to complement the 3D screen) and not fast 2D graphics.
Well in this case I'm pretty sure it's even running on the same engine as ASGV, so all they'd have to do is drop the resolution and cut the FPS in half.

Honestly I'm just hyped for more Gunvolt. I'm fully expecting this to tie into the secret ending of GV2 and set up the plot for GV3, and this specific title to have huge importance to the plot.

My sole gripe: If this is Pre GV1, then they're very likely to change the gameplay and stuff. Copen was utilizing his older wear armor from GV1 at that time, and it's unknown if unlikely that Copen had much if any testing on his Septima stealing abilities. His newer armor was an upgrade and reimagining if I remember from his GV1 appearance, so he shouldn't even have that for GV 0.5 (yes, I'm calling it 0.5 or IX, fight me).

I do like that it seems to be focusing on Sumeragi and their rank and file adepts from what we saw, instead of their elite groups like the Sinful Swords from GV1. This can go a number of ways, and I'm curious just what's due for a change.

The lack of a DIVA like Lumen though will be a bit awkward, but this also means no ress-from-death-and-be-OP mechanics most likely.

you realise thats a bad idea right? you cant just cut the framerate in half, the game will feel way more slugish because of it, hell, there isnt even a guarantee that it will keep a steady 30 FPS, if they did that then you'd be sure that it was a cheap cashgrab

Copen is way more fluid in design and fun to play as then GV.

But he is a completely unlikable character as far as the story goes. It's rare for me to totally dislike a playable character, let alone the rival/deuteragonist(Zero for example, is da best ever), so Intcreates really did a good job at making him an asshole.

i think they did a great job at making him a close minded prick with a heart of gold, he isnt bad, he is just really bad at forgiving and a little racist, he is less zero and more shadow the hedgehog as rivals go, which i appreciate, in the first game he just seemed like an ignorant, arrogant bastard, but the second one makes you think that deep down he is a lot like gunvolt, which plays into the duality theme of ASG2

I just really wanted to smack him sometimes with how... irrational his hatred could be, especially towards someone like G.V who at times he shares an objective with. Sometimes I felt like there was just NO getting through to him and he was just being so stubborn and unreasonable. He's definitely set in his ways/close-minded to say the least. I hope his ideology gets some revamping in the future(In light of the ending) because while he himself isn't evil on a personal level, I feel like his outlook/endgame is and if he refuses to compromise at all, in spite of everything that has happened, then he's just being obstinate.

His belief system is just too fanatical for me to actually like him. I'm just hoping for eventual character growth from him because the potential is certainly there as well as the setup.

But he's fun to play as so better to have him than not.

i agree, if he has a change of heart in this game (i still dont get if this is supposed to happen after or before the previous games) then he could potentially be the new zero, an anti hero that only follows what he believes in and not his instinct, which was zero's character arc in MMX4 and 5

At some point beggars can't be choosers lol. It's why the world is moving on from 3DS, it's a very old console at this point considering it runs at 240p. That's actually worse than most monitors from the early 90s.

True, and it shouldn't be hard at 240p to hit 60 FPS, but at some point it's just no longer worth the hassle to port when Switch is trending up and 3DS is trending down.

first, game dont magically double in framerate when ported to a different system using a different instruction set and a different resolution, its not even similar hardware in terms of internal structure, thats just not how it works, might gunvolt burst was made for the switch but the 3DS port, as optimized as it is, still has framerate issues during big boss battles or when too much stuff is on screen, which is why it uses what seems to be a double buffered vsync solution to halve the framerate in case it drops below 60 fps.

also, the 3DS isnt trending down, according to nintendo it still selling well, infact, better than last year according to their earnings report

Great news, I really like the Azure Striker Gunvolt series on my 3ds/switch ;)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

But I must say, Azure Striker looks better in portable mode then on docked mode using on the switch.
It will be nice if they add option to use scanlines filter.

this exactly, those sprites are made for 240p screens, the bigger the resolution the uglier they look, scan lines could solve that

True, on the old 3ds it looks also very nice.
I use a scanline filter all the time on my RetroPie console.
yeah, same here, old games dont look good for me unless they are sharp or scanlined, the PSP 3000 was a really great emulation machine because of that, the screen had scanlines on it already, so it made 2D games look really good

Wow, that's awesome! Way to go Inti!
I'm a little sad to not hear anything of a 3ds release, this is one of the series that made me get one lol. It's cool we'll be doing now if Copen, and plus this gives them time to figure out what they would want for a potential number 3, should they want to.
Also, why are so many of you shortening it to AGS? Wouldn't it make more sense to call it ASG, GV, or even ASGV? Sorry, that just threw me off a bit lol. Also the IX might be "0.9"? Maybe? Since it's a prequel? Ooh! I wonder if we'll see his shield from ASG1, that would be cool.
I just hope we get some more GV down the line too, I still liked controlling our lightning adept!
