Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Yesterday we had a whole slew of new games revealed on Nintendo's latest Direct, but the title that stood out as the presentation ended, was Super Smash Bros.

One thing Nintendo conveniently forgot to mention or hint at in any way; is the game a port of the WiiU Smash, following the trend of a lot of the current AAA Switch library? Or is it an entirely new Smash, just for Switch? Or maybe it's a mix of the 2, a DX version?

We've already had a ton of theories in the Super Smash Brothers announce thread - but here, we would like you to cast a vote!

Now, whether Smash 4 + 3ds content + adventure mode + new stages/character is a "new" game to people is up to everyone's judgement. I consider it to be an enhanced port, and I'm fine with that. If people want to call it a brand new game they can, but the difference will be purely marketing (and whether they remove smash 4 content or not)
Minus certain modes from Sm4sh, plus a few unique game modes, probably minus 3DS content. That is a brand new game. The only thing that will be absolutely familiar is the game engine, they're free to tweak mechanics, movesets, and animations however they please. If that's an "enhanced port," then Skyrim is an enhanced port of Morrowind.

5mash isn't even from the same developer as Sm4sh.

Nintendo still commissioned that game, they can reuse all its assets and rebrand it.

And yes, that's basically the difference between marketing it as 4.5 or 5.
4.5 > You keep all content + new content, balancing, tweaking etc
5 > you get new content minus some old content

I still have absolutely no idea why some people want 5 over 4.5.

Because 5 means a new base/unlockable roster plus new DLC characters. Plus tweaked movesets for existing characters. 4.5 means the same game on three different systems, with a couple added characters for Switch.

We don't agree with the definition of what 4.5 can mean then.
Pokken is a DX port but is getting new characters though DLC, and got some stuff tweaked.

Personally they can call it what they want. I just want all stages/characters from 4 back, and all musics :D
... and they better have a smash run mode cause that's just super fun.

I want a story mode and a proper single player campaign.
A lot of recent beat em ups have done them REALLY well.

Nintendo should really think out of the box a bit with their single player content of smash bros. its really lazy and always feels very tacked on.

Smash Run and 8 player mode.

I think everything else can be Smash 5 specific when it comes to modes.

Some people are hoping for target practice to be back. This mode was great also. It would be amazing if they lock some stage behind hard content. An issue with Smash 4 was how easy it was to unlock everything.

Pokken DX is just a continuation of the Wii U game. Soooo... Not valid here.

Brawl was amazing, but I will admit that they REALLY dropped the ball on Sm4sh. That's honestly the biggest reason I'm hoping this is a proper sequel

Brawl was floaty and too casual. Melee was too panicked and simplistic. Sm4sh was great.

Yeah I mean I get it.. its a fun fighting game and single player content isn't the top priority, but i feel nintendo with the last smash really took a lot of liberties with just putting nearly zero effort into it.

With other fighting games now putting a lot of effort into their single player portions, I hope nintendo do something. even a few cut scenes and a crappy story would do. Their writing is actually really entertaining and charming. I love the Odyssey cut scenes for example. They have possibly the most phenomenal cast ever too.

idk why im bothering even saying this crap.. they won't do it.

Just like smash 4.5 would be a continuation of the Wii U game? I don't get how that's invalid.

Feck me, he's right! EXCEPT.. It wouldn't be Smash 4.5.... Just like Pokken DX isn't a different game.

Well, I was talking about specifically between Smash 4 and Smash 5, but yeah, I want a proper target mode back too.

Going back to 4, Trophy Rush was cool. The "Mario Party" mode it had, they might try to improve it, but I don't really care if it doesn't come over to smash 5.

We were discussing about the differences of what a Smash 4.5 or 5 would be, and that's pretty much the point of this thread anyway.

New roster... New levels.. New movesets.. New balances..
