Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Is Smash 2018 a port, or a new game?

Yesterday we had a whole slew of new games revealed on Nintendo's latest Direct, but the title that stood out as the presentation ended, was Super Smash Bros.

One thing Nintendo conveniently forgot to mention or hint at in any way; is the game a port of the WiiU Smash, following the trend of a lot of the current AAA Switch library? Or is it an entirely new Smash, just for Switch? Or maybe it's a mix of the 2, a DX version?

We've already had a ton of theories in the Super Smash Brothers announce thread - but here, we would like you to cast a vote!

New logo, no finalized name (DX, Deluxe, for Switch, or otherwise), BOTW modeled Link. Its clear to me that if this started as a Wii U port (which I do believe it did) at this point, it has become its own entry, even if at its core it is a Wii U port. Making this different than your standard DX release like we've seen with Pokken, MK8, or Hyrule Warriors.

I think it will be a new game. Would be odd if they just ported even if it's seem possible since most of them are just "ports" of each other today.

If it is a new game, I wonder what they would call it?
They could still call it "SSB for the Switch" or
Smash (Switch pun here) or
Smash (Fight name here) or
Simply Smash 5. I don't consider, like most I believe, 3DS and Wii U as Smash 4 and 5.

Define "new". I mean, it's Smash, right?

Hell, looking through the files in Smash for Wii U's code, and you find remnants from Brawl, files and folders for Pokemon Trainer, Wolf, Snake, Squirtle, Ivysaur, and more are there. Friggin' Smash 4 is technically a super enhanced port of Brawl. They took what they had and built upon and around it. I think that's exactly what's happening here, though the difference here wont be as extreme as it was from Brawl to 4, but they clearly developed the game in the same way, I'm sure.

Honestly, I feel the game is going to be an enhanced port of Smash 4. Nintendo could just be using the new logo, presence of the Inklings, and BOTW Link as red herrings to generate additional hype for the game. Besides, the Inkling's introduction trailer uses nearly the exact same format as the character trailers for Smash 4, not to mention the virtually identical art style shared between this trailer and the previous ones.

I'm betting on an enhanced port of Smash 4 that incorporates content from both the Wii U and 3DS versions (including both Smash Tour and Smash Run, allowing you to switch between Classic Mode styles, trophies from both versions, etc.), in addition to adding new characters to the game (we may see the return of characters who got nixed from 4's roster, including Wolf, Ice Climbers, maybe Pichu as a crack pick, in addition to new characters like the Inklings). We may even see new Game Modes (perhaps even something similar to Melee's Adventure Mode, or even something like Brawl's Subspace Emissary, the return of Break the Targets or Board the Platforms, etc.) and stages (Zelda stage based off BOTW, Sonic stage based off of Mania/Forces, maybe Titanic Monarch, Mario stage based off of Odyssey, etc.).

Though, much of what I just said is more wishful thinking than anything else, so take that all with a grain of salt.

same with the mario kart 8 deluxe trailer - just says copyright 2017 (skip to 1:23min)

I just checked Pokken DX's copyright, and it also says 2017 for the game itself. For the Pokemon copyright as a whole, it specifies 1995-2017, but that doesn't count as that's the copyright for the brand/franchise itself, not the game.
For the game it only mentions 2017 too:

Really people, don't get your hopes up too much.
From what I've researched, there is no proof to point that this might be a new Smash.
Obviously they can't do the "DX" stuff because the copyright for Sm4sh had the console's name in the title (Super Smash Bros for Wii U / Super Smash Bros for 3DS). The fact that the game has no title specified yet might very well be because of this.
And the new logo... Pffff haha this is not even an argument really.

I can tell you the logo for the DX titles is not the same as the originals as well, a simply flames here and there doesn't make it new.
Besides, the logo is not consistent in menus or even in-game.
You can have the same circle-logo of Smash but with different assets put into it, Brawl did this several times, as did Sm4sh.

I'm not trying to sound harsh or be a douche, I'm just pointing out that this could be a port or a Smash 4.5, but not an entirely new game.
I'm just trying to help people be more down to earth and to not get their hopes crushed down the road if it indeed turns up being a port or a polished Sm4sh but for Switch with new stuff thrown in here and there.

if it was DX they would have called it DX or whatever, and the missing namco copyright is what intrigues me the most, if it was a simple wiiu port im sure they could have putted some gameplay since the game was already done lol.

well its pretty much the smash 4 logo just without the color

Look again. There are some significant differences that signify a calculated change.

Switch:
Super-Smash-Bros-Switch-Logo.jpg

Wii U/3DS
latest

Even looking past the obvious color and flair differenes, there are some things worth pointing out here. Most obvious is the cross through the bottom of Smash intersecting with the line going down through the S and A, that's never been a part of any Smash Bros logo. Second, look at the smash logo used for the O. on the Wii U and 3DS it was slanted, here on the Switch it's not slanted and perfectly circular. And finally look at the sizing of the letters. Note how on the Wii U version, the M in 'Smash' is occupying a fair amount of space below the S in 'Super' from the word above. While in the Switch logo, the letter 'M' doesn't occur anywhere directly below the letter S in 'Smash'. There are clearly some notable differences here.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
