is there any way to do this via bluetooth without having to install all this crap on the phone or on the pc? I have my phone connected via bluetooth. the phone is listed in devices, but I can't send or receive files without going into bluetooth settings, and iirc, it only works with one file at-a-time. this is just nerve racking.

You can send via Bluetooth but it's both slow and one-file-at-a-time.
Once they're both paired, you'll have to load some kind of file manager on the phone, then "Share" the file via Bluetooth, selecting your PC on the device list. Then on your PC right click the Bluetooth icon in the bottom right and there should be an option to receive files. I can't provide screenshots because I don't have my Bluetooth dongle on me right now, but it's fairly intuitive.
Just be warned that files transfer incredibly slowly over Bluetooth so unless it's only a small file I recommend finding a different method.

You could host an FTP server on your PC and use a file manager on Android to connect to it that way, or host an FTP server on your phone and do it that way. I have an FTP server running on my PC at all times, so it's convenient for me to transfer stuff that way.

Is there any particular reason you can't use USB?

I tried using an ftp app like blue ftp, but my phone would never connect, so I uninstalled that. however, seemingly, a side effect of this app has made my mouse extremely sluggish. using the touchpad, it works just fine. I would restart to see if that's the problem. unfortunately, I'm in the middle of something that might take around 12 hours.

Any reason you don't want to use something like airdroid? You do have to install an app on the phone, but on the pc you just go to the website on any browser and connect from there.
Other than that, ftp or sending the files to a hosting site is the best option.

Go into settings, set "Home Directory" to "Custom Folder" then press on the "Custom Folder" underneath and select the root of your phone or SD card, then restart the server.

that did the trick. I had tried that, but the only thing that would show up is folders recently used. I think I've got it working now. thanks.

Wow, am I the only one who still uses usb?
The OP specifically asked for a way to transfer files through Bluetooth, not USB. They may be in a situation where its not possible to move files over USB. (Granted, the only time I've had that issue is with my Windows Tablet when I didnt have my OTG cable on hand but still).

Unless you use adb instead of mtp, then it is as fast and reliable as the old USB Mass Storage system.

Nope MTP is a cludge cludge not fit for purpose with massive reliability issues. Unfortunately, this is the kind of thing one only ever finds out when it's too late. I once copied a file from my phone to my computer using MTP. Windows confirmed that the transfer had completed and I had no reason to disbelieve it so deleted the source file. It was only about a week later that I found out that only about half of the file had been copied. I then looked up online to find that there was a whole host of people with similar issues and people with far greater understanding of these things than me explaining the technical reasons that MTP was an unsuitable protocol.

Use it at your own risk.

1)setup a windows share on your pc
2)download X-plore on google play store its free
3)copy stuff
4) profit
I play video and any media right off my windows server SMB share. X-plore also supports ftp and cloud drives like google and one drive. Its literally the only app you need for android fine management

Dude, you totally misunderstood me here. I said to use "adb", aka the Android Debug Bridge, to push files through USB instead of using shitty, broken MTP. Using adb to push and pull files is as fast as the old USB Mass Storage system, although it is not as user friendly AFAIK (There are some 3rd party frontends to make it easier for casual usage, such as adbfs, but I never tried them).
Here's it in action, I pushed a 1.6GB ISO in 90 seconds-ish, and pulled it back to my home folder in 77 seconds.

Nobody sambas? I have SMB shares on my network, and a slew of apps on the Play Store have SMB support, it's like built in to windows.

Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
