So, I was recommended here off of another site when no one seemed to have any better idea of what to do than myself, so I'm really hoping someone here will have some kind of an idea as to what to do.

My daughter spilled juice on my N3DS a few months back. It's a newer model XL. I went in and scrubbed off the residue with a soft toothbrush and some isopropyl alcohol. Reconnected everything and, when booted, the screens came up black and I could hear some noises in the background. When I used the A+Up+R+L boot method to go into the system update, both screens work, as do my controls, sound, and the wi-fi. I've tried doing the update, but my system is still up to date because it had been updated not long before the incident (it still is up to date as of today as well).

After scouring the internet for clues as to what might be the culprit, I came across a tip yesterday that said someone had encountered a similar problem and disconnected the camera, which had fixed the problem. After doing this and retrying, I now get an Error code telling me to hold the power until it turns off and then turn it back on instead of just black screens on the regular boot, which of course does nothing to resolve the issue. System update mode still works just fine.

I feel like there has to be something I'm missing, especially since all of the components seem to work just fine in the System Update mode and the change from black screens to error codes after disconnecting the camera ribbons. If anyone has encountered this issue or knows any solutions, I'd be forever grateful. I miss my Pokemon, dammit, lol.

This is going to be a long shot. Can you take out the battery, hold the power button for a few seconds, and let the 3DS self discharge for like 2 minutes? Put everything back in and see what happens. I'm curious if the 3DS has a battery save state that can be cleared.

I just tried this, but it unfortunately didn't make a difference. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Okay, do you have a magnet and not one of those crappy, flat pizza ad ones? With the 3DS turned on, put the magnet around the (B) and (Start) button to force the 3DS to go to sleep mode. Does it still have black screens : Edit (after lifting and dropping the magnet)?

Disconnect the camera ribbon cable and boot without it plugged in. Either the camera ribbon cable is shorting, or the connector.

I'll have to try this later on. I don't have one on hand at work, but I believe I do at home.

That's the thing - I did that earlier. Prior to disconnecting it, whenever I'd boot, the screens would be black. With it disconnected, it boots to the "Error has occurred" screen.

Is the 3ds trying to access a camera? Maybe theres a stuck shoulder button on the home menu, as it will do that when trying to access an unplugged camera. I had this happen before

So, small update. Unplugging the game cartridge reader caused it to start briefly coming up with the main screen prior to going back to the error code. I plugged it back in afterwards and it's still giving me about 1.5-2 seconds prior to going over to the Error Has Occurred screen, so I'm going to try replacing this later and see what difference, if any, it makes.

Is this 3DS hacked btw? Other things you can try from reading about others with similar black screen of death throughout Google and YouTube research.

- Boot the 3DS without an micro SD card.
- Disconnect and reconnect the WIFI module.
- Disconnect and reconnect the LCDs flex cables.

It isn't hacked. I've tried the first suggestion, but I can't do the second because it's the newer xl with the chip on the motherboard instead of the connector. The third one I haven't done though, so I'll try that after I try the magnet trick and replacing the cartridge reader.

Yay, I'm really sorry to hear this happened to you. Looking up online, there were several instances of those who have N3DSXL with the exact symptom you described: sound plays, blank/black screens, and bootable recovery mode with working screens that do nothing.

- Such as this guy who unfortunately ended up sending his in to Nintendo: New 3DS XL bricked/black screen of death. Please help.

- Someone with similar accident: 3DS XL Got wet and screen doesn't turn on. Sound works but that's it.

- This person got lucky after crashing Ghost Recon with semi-sleep state: Nintendo 3DS' Black Screen of Death

- One owner reported holding his system until the next available online update, but the issue lingered after firmware update: [new 3ds xl] Black Screen, Blue Light, with sound

- Supposedly, this might be fixable by installing custom firmware through ntrboot.

Black Screen of Death appears to come in all shades of messed up including non-recoverable fatal.
