I got some money during the holidays and I now have just enough for a N2DS XL, so I got a few questions regarding that. I'm currently using an O2DS. Haven't decided yet if I'll upgrade systems, but depending on the answers to my questions I may do sometime soon...

So, for starters, I need to mention that I plan to do DSiWare transfer if I do get one. Now, what I want to ask:

1) Can I delete games first before transferring the NNID between consoles and just transfer the tickets for them, then redownload them on the new system? Like, only keep the game I'll use for DSiWare method, transfer that along with the tickets and NNID from O2DS to N2DS XL, then reddownload everything I deleted from the eshop on the N2DS XL. I have a FULL 128GB SD card on my 2DS right now and transferring that much data will both take forever and will require having another card that big (which I don't), I plan to use that SD card on the new system and to use a smaller one for the transfer temporarily...

2) How sturdy and comfortable is the N2DS XL really? I love how the O2DS is, fits perfectly in my hands (mine are huge) and is incredibly comfortable and sturdy, so I'm hesitant to replace it, especially how I hate the clamshell design! Also, how does the battery fare compared to the O2DS?

3) I'm mainly considering upgrading systems because I want to be able to do things like stream games and to lessen loading times, especially how most large games are extended memory ones, so how good is the streaming with NTR on those and are the loading times considerably shortened overall?

4) Should I just wait and save up for a Switch instead after some time when it gets cheaper?

1) too long, letting someone else answer
2) My opinion, it's very sturdy and comfortable. It's also very light which makes it a joy to hold. Buttons are clicky and a big improvement over old2ds. The old2ds shoulder buttons can't be beat though. The battery life is about the same as old2ds, even while using the same model li-ion!
3) Streaming is pretty solid on new3ds. General menu navigation is a little faster than old2ds but nothing earth-shattering. Ext mem games load much faster since the system doesn't have to reboot to a new mem mode. Emulation performance is night-and-day better.
4) Eh, you're not going to save much waiting for new2ds to price drop, it's already bargain-priced. Switch is great and getting most of the new games compared to the 3ds/2ds. But the new2ds has the advantage of a mature homebrew scene and great past library. That's a tough decision I can't make for you.

I think you should get the Switch unless 3ds game streaming is a must for you.
One thing is that some games can mess up, if you enable the higher clock speed and l2 cache for faster load speed, unless that game supports it.
Some games don't break so its dependent on game.

Yes, you can redownload games you purchased on the new system. I sold my 2DS once. Was without one for a year. Then decided to buy the n3ds xl.
Called Nintendo and they transfered my account to the new system without me doing the 3ds transfer, since I didn't have my old system anymore. And I redownloaded all my games.

Usually you just transfer and you can put you old memory card into the new system. No need for a bigger mem card. Why do you want to delete you games anyway? 2ds should come with a memcard.

For last one, I meant to save up for when the Switch gets cheaper (340€ here). Thanks for the reply, 2 and 3 make it sound pretty good!

As I said, I got a FULL 128GB card on my O2DS and about 106GBs out of those are legit games from the eshop. I'll need an SD card of AT LEAST that much capacity in order to do the system transfer, meaning deleting most stuff first and redownloading them after will help as I won't need a second huge SD card. Also, I'm talking about system transfer to install CFW through the DSiWare method...

I honestly doubt the Switch will be getting a price drop anytime soon. The sales are doing way better than the original o3DS's first year so it shouldn't be getting a price drop anytime soon.

2) I recently bought the Pokeball n2DSXL and so far, I love it. It's comfortable, looks really good.
3) Everything in a n2DSXL is the same as a n3DSXL in terms of running ext mem games and NTR streaming so if you've heard of something that works for a n3DSXL, it works for the n2DSXL.

@Quantumcat may be able to provide some insight on the first question.

I know that it's the same as the N3DS, just asking in general:P And yup, figured I'll have to wait for her to see this thread for that question, lol

I'm curious about this: why is it that you hate the clamshell design? Every 3DS system (except the o2DS obvs) has that design so I'm wondering if upgrading would work out for you, even if you're wanting the features that the n3DS/n2DS systems offer. I'm not trying to poke fun or anything, but just genuinely curious if it would work out. No need to waste your money on something you might not even like and then return the next day.

Because clamshell is easily one of the least durable designs possible for a console, especially compared to one solid piece designs. I have had bad experiences with my Fat DS, DSi and DSi XL all breaking in one way or another because of the clamshell! Fat DS's hinges broke, DSi's lid slammed too hard accidentally and ended up breaking the screen cord and DSi XL just straight up was cut in two...

I've had those same problems with my DS but I've not had a single issue with my several 3DS systems and I've had the system since launch week. I cannot tell you how many DS systems I went through. I think Nintendo upped their game with the 3DS's clamshell design because my original aqua blue 3DS (while I don't use it anymore due to it not being able to charge correctly and I decided it was time for a replacement anyways) lasted 4/5+ years without breaking at the hinges or having a screen being broke from accidental hard lid slamming or anything else.

Since you are transferring your NNID with DSIware method you can re-download the games after you delete them.

I know, it's obvious they made the 3DS much sturdier than the DS/DSi series, but I still don't like the clamshell because you never know when something will happen. If I do get a N2DS XL, then I can just overlook that, I don't bother too much about such things, just take them into account when still deciding.

If you bought the games then yes you can delete them, and redownload from the eShop later. Backup their save data with JKSM or Checkpoint first though. For pirated games, you can extract the ticket.db before the transfer then restore it on the target console. I'm not sure how though, the CTR transfer guide used to have you backup the tickets then restore them (so I could tell you to just follow that part and not the CTR transfer part), but now the backup is confusingly inside the actual CTR transfer step. If you got the games in freeShop it would be easiest to just download them again after the transfer (make sure to back up the save data first). If you didn't you'll need to find the original cias and install them again.

Heres some information I found on the DSIware trasnfer method.
https://www.tapatalk.com/topic/27398-gbatemp-net/454286-cfw-system-transfer-process

With the method you'll have 2 systems with your NNID.
I wonder if Nintendo can detect 2 different systems with NNID and prevent downloads for you.

If not then you should be able to download games just fine on your new system.
When you system transfer your NNID is moved to the target console - there won't be two consoles with the same NNID.

That is if you restore your nand then you'll have 2 systems with NNID.
I was watching a video and they restored the nand on their old system. Don't know why they did that.

The console thinks it has the NNID but it really doesn't. If you visit the eShop you get an error message all games etc associated with it get deleted. The way to fix the error message is to inject a blank nnidsave.bin. They restored the NAND on the source since if the DSiWare doesn't transfer properly they can move it to the SD card, put the SD card in the target, and restore to the system (both have the same encryption after the restore, so can read the same Nintendo 3DS folder).

Ok, thanks. I'm talking about legitimately owned (purchased) games from the eshop, everything else I can just get from FreeShop.

@SG854 DSiWare method of installing CFW doesn't let you have the same NNID on two systems. Also, you restore the NAND on the old one, but will be forced to make a new NNID as far as I know.

Seems like you got it then.

Man the DSIware transfer method seems a lot more complicated.
I hacked mines when it was still using the downgrade process in Jan last year.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Gonna think about if it's worth it for me buying one now. Can't close the thread myself, so let's leave it to get buried under the newer ones now.
