PS1/2 PS2 or PS1 for PS1 games?

I'm going to be redoing my AV setup in the future but I need to decided if I'm going to hook up my PS1 or not as I want to also be able to play e.g. imports, etc.

Currently I have a PS2 softmodded with an 80GB internal IDE HDD with component and an old PS1 with a Parallel port (but no cheat cart) and SCART.

If I understand correctly, the current methods for the PS2 would either be to use a modchip (not an option for me) or to use PS2PSXe/popsloader, both of which can have compatibility issues or to use my original PS1 with a swap disc or to use the gameshark with the I/O port.

Anyone have experience with these methods? Can you please say which one is more recommended or is there something I've missed?

Even then, are there still additional reasons I might want to use the original over the PS2 e.g. bad upscaling?

I'm finding popstarter to be a pain in the ass. I can't get castlevania (symphony of night) to load. Compatibility list shows it's a compatible game. I have a chip, so I quit fussing with that mess. Anyhow, I'd probably go with the ps1 if I didn't have the DMS3 in my ps2.

If you have a psp, that works awesome for running ps1 eboots

If I was going down that route I'd just look at using my HTPC or something.

I'm looking at hooking up a number of retro systems to my TV and the PS2 could avoid certain issues if it's good enough through softmod methods otherwise I'd work around my problems.

If you have an HTPC why don't you just use Mednafen? It's pretty accurate, you'll hardly he difference from the real thing. If you use the Retroarch version you can also fix the wobbly polygons most games had.

Haven't tried Mednafen but Retroarch can be a pain if you do have the exact right ROM set.

Call it nostalgia, but part of me just looks at my retro consoles sitting on a shelf and I just think it's a bit of a waste not having them connected, especially with the odd quirk emulators can have and other issues e.g. Retroarch's CRC based ROM detection.

The only reason I bring up the PS1 is because of the PS2 having decent BC AFAIK but I don't have a modchip in the latter and the former I know has non-solder based alternatives.

Best picture on CRT with RGB is both the same for PS1 and PS2. Original system is better than emulation but latest PS emulators have nice improvements like PGP(non glitchy textures) non stretched widescreen and higher resolution.
The easiest method is to just use original or selfmade discs.
Popsloader and all method to start PS1 from HDD on PS2 are not as compatible as you hope for and may be frustrating.

I am still waiting for PS-IO to get more accessible, but as far as I read it als ohas not 100% compatibility.

Vita TV for PS1 games, if you can get one on 3.20FW it uses the native PS1 side and doesn't rely on POPSLoader that is on the later 3.60/adrenaline vitas which has some compatibility issues.

You still have to use the eboots in PSP mode then with said button problems or use retroarch which is relatively ok to use but far from as good as the pc or other versions of retroarch or other ps1 emus.

edited my post when you replied, 3.20 doesnt use popsloader in epsp.

edt: it uses TN-X through a exploited PS1 game on the vita side.

I meant Popsloader for PS2, but it is called Popstarter, my bad. No matter what you use on PSP or PS Vita, it always won't be as accurate as a original system or an advanced computer emulator. For the go it is fine to use one of those or course or if you just like the portability. I also use my Vita to play some PS games here and there.

Thanks, as of now I think I'll hook the PS1 up then.

If you are using old hardware id go with a PS2 with official component cables, smoothing switched on in the settings on the PS2 its self.

If you're going with your PS1, there is another method for loading backups that's relatively new (and, at the moment, sold out unfortunately). It's the PSIO, a bit like a modchip but you can run games off of an SD Card so you don't burn out your CD drive's laser.

The install is super simple, just solder the switch board kit and plug the adapter into the IO slot of the PS1. Only con (IMO) is they're super expensive, ~$120, and they're sold out lol.

As to your question, the PS2 does have some incompatibilities with some PS1 games, the more popular being the Mortal Kombat trilogy (it'll freeze if the continue timer runs out), Tomba doesn't work unless you watch the whole intro sequence, Legend of Dragoon doesn't work on the launch PS2 (model 30001 IIRC), Final Fantasy Tactics on the launch as well IIRC.
