Hi! Quick question to the hive mind!

My brother have bought the New 2DS XL. I have a New 3DS XL that I installed arm9loaderhax on last year and recently updated to boot9strap using the guide on https://3ds.guide/a9lh-to-b9s. In a weak moment I promised to help him install CFW on his New 2DS XL (well, there was promises of bourbon...).

My brothers New 2DS XL is running FW 11.4.0-37E out of the box. When I read the guide the row for FW 11.4 is blank (https://3ds.guide/get-started-(new-3ds) ). Does this means I must first update the 2DS XL to 11.5 (the latest FW) before installing CFW? Don't want to update if it is not necessary... :P

My other question is if I need to use the DSiWare method to install boot9strap? When I installed ARM9Loader on my own 3DS XL last year I didn't need to buy any DSiWare, but maybe this have changed with boot9strap?

First, you must update to 11.5 on the N2DSXL if you want to use the DSiWare method to install B9S.

You didn't have to use the DSiWare method on your 3DSXL because you were on a system version lower than 11.4 at the time. On 11.4, there are only three ways to install B9S:
  1. DSiWare method (requires a second 3DS that already has CFW)
  2. Hardmod method (requires soldering)
  3. ntrboothax method (requires a compatible DS flashcart) (hasn't been released yet)
The DSiWare method is the easiest way.

Thank you for your swift replay!

I have updated the 2DS XL to 11.5 (it feels weird updating OFW... :P) and bought one of the recommended DSiWare. Will try and follow the new guide and see if it works out!

Make sure you're following the guide exactly. For example, the DSiWare game must be bought on the CFW N3DSXL, not on the OFW N2DSXL. Good luck.

Update!

Everything went fine. I got CFW on the 2DS XL. I receive an error message when I start Luma3DS Updater ("Fatal error failed to obtain required data") but except that everything went as planned.

However, I now need to restore my own 3DS XL. The guide states that you either can wait one week to system transfer from the 2DS XL device back to the 3DS XL., call Nintendo OR "remove the NNID from the source 3DS". What does this exactly mean? Would my 3DS XL be reset? Would it still have CFW?

Your 3DSXL still has CFW. The guide had you restore a NAND backup you made before the system transfer. That should have restored everything back to how it was on the 3DSXL except for one thing: the NNID. As far as Nintendo's servers are concerned, your NNID that was on your 3DSXL was transferred to the N2DSXL, and because that's on their servers, there's nothing you can do about it alone. You have two options to get the NNID back on the 3DSXL:
  1. Call Nintendo, say you lost the N2DSXL, and tell them you want the NNID transferred to the 3DSXL.
  2. Wait a week and perform a system transfer from the N2DSXL back to the 3DSXL.
If you didn't have an NNID on the 3DSXL, or you don't care that the NNID is on the N2DSXL now, then all of this is pointless.

I really don't care about the NNID so I guess I'll just leave it be... Everything on my 3DS XL did however disappear, so I guess I need to install FBI and everything again.

If I later want to do a system transfer from the 2DS XL to the 3DS XL, will the 2DS XL also be factory reset (but with CFW)?

After the system transfer the 2DS XL did not get all the old 3DS XL software, like my downloaded homebrew. I assume this is because the system transfer do not transfer this kind of stuff? Is it possible to make a NAND backup that includes stuff like this (i.e. games from freeShop)?

If everything disappeared, it means you didn't follow the guide properly. There's a part in the guide where you restore the NAND backup you made on the 3DSXL from before you did the system transfer. Did you make a NAND backup before the system transfer like you were supposed to?

You are correct that illegitimate titles like FBI, pirated games, etc. will not transfer through a system transfer. Those things will have to be installed manually on the N2DSXL.

That is correct.

Ah! I haven't gotten to the part where I restore the NAND backup! I was too busy wondering about what it meant to remove the NNID, but I can now see that the steps after choosing one of the three options after completing the initial setup (https://3ds.guide/installing-boot9strap-(dsiware-game-injection) is detailing this.

I MUST do one of these three options before restoring the NAND backup? I can't have the same NNID on both devices?

You cannot have the same NNID on two 3DS devices. Nintendo's servers only recognize one 3DS device with it. Attempting to use the NNID on your 3DSXL right now will result in errors. You have three options:
  • Call Nintendo and move the NNID from the N2DSXL to the 3DSXL.
  • Wait a week and perform another system transfer from the N2DSXL to the 3DSXL.
  • Remove the old NNID from the 3DSXL.
Edit: You can do ahead and do the NAND restore on your 3DSXL. All three steps can be done after you restore your NAND backup.
