Hacking Could we change a native Wii U game's resolution?

Could that be possible? Since Wii U is almost 100% hacked today, I think we could do this.
I mean, you can change Gamecube and Wii's resolution (480p/480i) with Loaders.
Can that be possible? New Super Mario Wii U runs at 720p, but I believe we can have 1080p at 60fps without problems.

We can't change the Gamecube and Wiis resolution. We can change interlaced to progressive and vice versa, which are just different ways of presenting the same picture.

Changing resolution from 720p to 1080p is... impossible. At least for the WiiU. That's doubling the resolution, that means it takes more than double the processing power. It's not like Nintendo sat back and said "well, d'uh, 720p is more than enough, let's call it a day and ship those games", the Wii U can't handle those higher resolution.

You can, with an emulator on a PC with much better specs. Take Dolphin for Wii and Gamecube and Cemu for Wii U. But not on the actual, physical, Wii U.

We could if we even had access to the whole system. [Which imo, we currently have but boot1 will surely unlock even more hidden features]
We would need to overclock GPU which... look at your Wii U. Small fan, it will burn itself. Putting too much load on it will melt everything inside.
(Some sources say it has a similiar gpu to AMD Radeon HD5xxx so you can already guess how it can overheat)

There are some less demanding games like Minecraft which, I'm 99% sure, should run at 1080p without breaking a sweat.
I think it's possible to force the resolution, since CEMU uses "graphics packs" to force the engine to render certain "textures" at a higher (or lower) resolution or something like that.
To be honest I wouldn't mind playing Super Mario 3D World at 1080p30 instead of 720p60...

Minecraft lags when there's too much mobs and lava so it's demanding.
Minecraft is CPU resources heavy and Wii U kinda struggles with it.

That's assuming we could even overclock it to ANY higher.

Really? Minecraft doesn't use lots of polygons nor demanding shaders.
Anyway, we could use the same hack to decrease the resolution and consequently increase the performance in this and other games.
What you want is Magic. It is impossible to make a computational heavy operation even harder and at the same time make it run faster. This is not how this works. This is not how any of this works.

but with wii games like mario galaxy I know for sure from experience have an internal lock in the iso itself or something to prevent the res from going higher, unless you know what I was doing wrong I was trying to move up to 1080p but it just would not do it :/ it looked like the same res

Wii games can't scale in resolution higher than 480p - it's not possible whatsoever. No homebrew can output anything higher.

Wii U games are similar to a lot of seventh gen games which use a lot of varying resolutions and depending on how resolution is dictated it could be possible - on original Xbox it's just setting some strings in the executables, but I seriously doubt it's that simple on the Wii U and I wouldn't expect it. For some background too ports on the Wii U tend to suffer from sub HD resolutions often or 720p - the only 1080p games on the system on certain indies and first party games, but this is only because the console is seriously limited by it's CPU but does have a quite impressive GPU which when developed for right can be used to achieve those high resolutions. It's how Microsoft gets Forza 7 running at 4K 60 on the Xbox One X - make your engine super GPU heavy and go from there. The CPU on Nintendo's machine is really, really old and not even that fast. It's a big reason why a lot of third parties skipped it completely during it's life.

What? I never said anything of the sort. What I meant to say is that it could be possible to decrease the resolution to make games run faster. Of course you cannot increase the resolution and expect it to run faster, duh...

Oh, you're right, I've misread that bit. My apologies.

I think the same about cemu and graphic packs. Would be nice use it in system menu, a homebrew app or loadiine.
If Smash runs at 60fps 1080p, new super mario bros u can do that instead of 720p, and Mario Kart 8 too, or at least in 900p. Would be awesome.
Currently I'm playing Botw in Cemu 1080p again (because i deleted my save in wii u) but it crashes sometimes and the gyroscope doesn't work very well. Would be nice try botw in wii u at 900p and see any frame drops :P

A decent gaming PC + Cemu can do the job. But on a physical Wii U, no. Or at least probably not. Overclocking the GPU to anything that COULD increase performance will probably melt the entire thing inside. That's if we CAN overclock the GPU in the first place.

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

    To me that seems reasonable.

I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol

I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.

Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol

I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
