Hello. A friend brought me his o3ds which he said had arm9 installed. He says he tried to update luma (I am guessing to ver 8.0) without updating to boot9. After that all he gets is a black screen. I have tried holding start, select, l, r buttons while booting with his SD in and nothing. I have also tried with an old sd card I have with and older luma. All I get is black screen, does not turn off or anything.

He does not have a nand backup on his SD, and does not know on what version firmware the 3ds was on. I was going to try and hard mod it and patch the nand with boot9, but I would need to know the version the console was on.

Any ideas of what I can do?

Edit: I have asked him and he says all he did was change files on SD card to try to update luma. He never run any updater, and the 3ds ever since has not booted. Wierd since it should boot without the SD card in (or at least blink on then off if luma was not installed in ctrnand).

Downgrade back to 7.0.5, then follow this to update to b9s and Luma v8.0.

EDIT: After further reading, if the console doesn't turn off, I'm not sure what to do. May need a hardmod.

Is there (for some reason) a boot.firm file on the SD card? How about... does pressing L+Up+Start+A while booting bring you to a system update screen?

Edit: Might be L+R+A+Up
I never remember.

PS: If you can boot into recovery mode, it's still advisable not to run it as we don't want you updating to 11.4 if you have no entry point for CFW. This is just a test to see if you're actually bricked or not.

https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/releases/download/v7.0.5/Luma3DSv7.0.5.7z put the arm9loaderhax.bin on the root of your sd card if its not already there. Or if there is arm9loaderhax.bin.bak on yourbsd card root change it to Arm9loaderhax.bin try again. Maybe?

Thanks, I already had it on. I also tried with the one you linked. Same issue.

boot.firm is not on the sd. I have tried that combo (both) and nothing appears. Just black.

Thanks, but I cant seem to find how to downgrade luma. The update part is not hard, I have done it before. I tried using older version luma files on a different sd. Still booted to black. I can turn it off by removing the battery.

You do what GameInCanada said and replace the arm9loaderhax.bin file on the SD card with the one from 7.0.5.

you said you tried an SD w/ a older luma, if it wa sTOO Old a version that'd happen asit really wasnt till atleast 6.6 stable an dthe 7.0 Nightlys got 11.4 proper support.

when you boot w/o an SD does the blue wpower LED come on then back off quickly? (this indicates your not bricked just missing payload on SD/CTRNAND)

No. It stays on without the SD card as well. I have tried varios versions of luma now, and still same issue.

then it soundlike it's been bricked, an dif thats the case only way to fix is w/ a Hardmod.
I can hardmod, I do it all the time to downgrade, or now to patch boot9 into nand. But without a nand backup I cant think of any way to unbrick. Maybe patch boot9 to the nand but for that I would have to know what version firmware it was on.

safest bets are likely 11.2~11.4
