Hey @elhobbs I appreciate You porting Hexen over the 3DS

I was wondering will there be anymore updates of this in the future?
like maybe a better OSK (On Screen Keyboard) Just Asking...

Also do you plan on trying to bring more 90s Games on the homebrew as ports?

Thanks for DOOM and HEXEN by the way :)

I'm more concerned if the port can play at least the MIDI files.

Is not to sound like as a despicable person, but if i want such experience, i rather play the DS ports.

It plays the midi files.
Edit - Does the ds version of hexen play midi files? I know the ds version of heretic does and there was a chocolate doom port that I helped add midi playback to, but I don't think dsdoom has midi playback.

The keyboard has such minimal use - I do not really feel compelled to spend a lot of time on it. The project is open source feel free to add improvements yourself :)
I did release ports of heretic and a quake 1 engine (spectre3ds). They are interesting in that they use hardware rendering. Spectre3ds has a limited ui and it is not as complete as ctrquake but it is playable and can load a lot of mods. It has trouble with mods featuring high resolution textures but they don't really help on the 3ds anyway imo.
I have started a couple other ports but I have not had a lot of time to spend on 3ds homebrew lately.

I don't know anything about making stuff for homebrew dude lol but that's alright

I did notice Heretic I've tried it on my N3DSXL and like just as it loads the game freezes Is that normal? because it got me hyped but when it froze I was like dammnn it /:

and I remember your Quake Port dude I downloaded that when you made it granted it wasn't the best but I did download it

Can't wait to see what else you have done and take your time dude I can wait

Thanks again

It doesn't. Hexen and DSDoom doesn't have MIDI playback.

Sorry to necro an old thread, but @elhobbs (or anyone with the knowledge to do so....)

Any chance of this getting a .cia release? I'm running into an issue where I have 11.3 + A9LH & Luma installed. To try and play the game, I go into the HBL Loader (.cia) and attempt to run the game. It constantly crashes on a red screen upon startup. If I go through Soundhax first, then it starts/runs fine without any issues. It'd be amazing to negate the need to run this via 3dsx/Soundhax & HBLL. It's really the only reason I haven't updated to 11.4 yet lol

Havent tried this, is this 3D like doom?

It does have 3D - and just like doom it is not the best (but what can you expect with 2d sprites in a 2.5d world). I did put a tiny bit of effort in by putting the automap on the bottom screen - use the tab key to toggle.

That's awesome! Love the homebrew you put out! Your the only one who put any effort at all into porting over great classics into 3D! Wish there were more of you![emoji1]

Many of us wants to see some updates from elhobbs. Hopefully one day :)
I made some changes trying to get this to build with the latest devkitarm. the most noticeable change is that the music playback is now being synthesized at the correct rate. it has to be synthesized at 11k (poor-ish quality) because the 3ds cant handle anything higher - particularly if 3d is enabled.
If you get a chance, please give it a try, and let me know about any issues you find.

Finally got it working. I had to download Smealum's updated otherapp payload for N3DS 11.4 and I can get into the game with no issues. I still am hoping for a .cia release though. I'd love to be able to ditch HBL forever. :)

If someone can put together a decent banner then I could probably be bothered to create a CIA build.

These are just some crappy ones I threw together in Photoshop. I think they look decentish.
X9JGTBA.png
WIP3: little bit of a blur to the outside, has the larger more 3D-looking logo from WIP2
BxPdkAj.png
WIP1: basic, has a smaller logo centered on the inside
GoII3b9.png
WIP2: Has a larger logo extending outside the bounds of the image, kinda fitting with the whole "3D" thing going on

All of them are sized properly (256x128), so they can just be right clicked and saved if you want to use em. Either that or I can send you some raw PS files if you need them (or better yet, a banner file, but I haven't messed with custom banners in eons...).

I created a cia build - https://github.com/elhobbs/hexen/releases/tag/v0.7.1-alpha
I tried to add a wav file to the banner, but it does not appear to have worked. it plays the annoying beeps instead.
anyway... give it a try and let me know if you have any issues.

Hell yeah! It runs like a dream! The top screen stuff is a bit off center, but it still runs perfect nonetheless. I am sure you're aware of it anyways! One thing I did notice was that the automap is a bit finicky. I don't know if this is something that I can change in the config or not, but whenever TAB is pressed to display the automap, the HUD changes to the item select one as opposed to the normal one. As far as I can remember, that's normal behavior for the game, so I don't know if there's any way around it doing that so that the automap could be displayed at all times alongside the regular hud. Only reason this bugs me a bit is because Hexen is a bit more "map necessary" imho. I tend to get lost in the game a lot easier than in Doom since it has huge open areas as opposed to corridors and stuff, haha.

Banner looks pretty good though! ^_^ If you need any other banners made for other projects, just let me know and I can whip em up for you.

yes, the banner looks good. thanks for creating it!
I figured out the problem with the banner wav - it was too long. apparently it needs to be really short.
