So I bought a Pikachu Edition shell and some white buttons for my New 3DS XL, because I'm not shelling out the $400.00 eBay prices for one. And I like how the white buttons show the colored letters really well. The only real snag I ran into was the 3 zif cables going through the hinge, and I accidentally got the pin stuck once from putting it in upside-down. (Oops)

THE GOOD:
I finally got a custom New 3DS system the way I want it. The shell came from Europe (German), and was only $14 with free shipping.

THE BAD:
It took a month to get to me. The process took me 5 hours due to the snags, and me being overly-careful not to botch a $200 handheld. I will not ever attempt this again, the process was a nightmare and working with so many zif cables freaks me out.

AND THE UGLY:
I flung one of the bottom feet that covers the hidden screws out of my grey bottom piece across the room while prying it out, so that's lost forever... And I also can't get the screws off the other battery cover to secure the Pikachu one to the back. Power, stylus, volume slider, Start, Select, R, L, ZR and ZL are still dark grey because the button set was only ABXY, D-pad, and Home.

THE VERDICT:

While the end result came out nice, I cannot recommend doing this unless you have small hands, great lighting and good tools.

there is one sitting at my local toys r us for like 3 weeks now lol, i was considering boxing mine back up and returning it and exchanging for the pikachu but its just so damn yellow.

i got a majoras mask shell but didnt come with buttons so i think im waiting until i get buttons to do the swap. red buttons on the gold majoras mask would look bad.

taking apart any of the DS lineup of handhelds SUCKS. its a good 2 hours of work even if you have been inside many times for a novice (ive done a few top screens and shell replacements before). swapping a motherboard isn't horrible but complete disassembly is a pain.

Congrats!
I did some re-shells on some ds-lites once; due to hinge crack issues...
Getting the cables through the hinge was the worst!
So if the new 3ds xl is similar to the ds-lite then I know how you feel and give you kudos for doing it!!!

I'll be honest, I think your dark grey buttons look better with the yellow pikachu theme over the white buttons that they included. I'm curious as to what it would look like if you kept all the grey buttons. Regardless, great job, it looks great!

I was going to say black buttons instead of white would look awesome.

Thanks for all the support guys. I do love the outcome, but damn it was a lot of work. My hands are big and made the hinge part a nightmare, even with tweezers.

Hmmm amazing work :D ! just the screw covers but all in all amazing man, I was thinking about doing a custom hand painted shell with some NFS style vinyl and custom made buttons , just gotta ask how hard it was since my hands are like medium sized.
