Make sure that the hdd itself is in good condition. That was happening to me too but it was because I had a faulty hdd. Switched it for another one and I never got that message again

Crap. I can't afford another $50 hard drive right now. And yes, it's connected with a Y cable

save up your money and get 500gb ssd on ebay, if possible, for about $120 or whatever that amount converts to where you're from.

I just bought a 128GB microSD card for $25 during black Friday, and use a nano usb adapter so it doesn't stick out. ZERO issues. Splatoon runs fine from it, as expected.
