Make sure that the hdd itself is in good condition. That was happening to me too but it was because I had a faulty hdd. Switched it for another one and I never got that message again

SSD? For a Wii U? Are you off your meds? Got myself a 3TB HDD for £70, a Wii U doesn't need an SSD anyway

I just bought a 128GB microSD card for $25 during black Friday, and use a nano usb adapter so it doesn't stick out. ZERO issues. Splatoon runs fine from it, as expected.
