Mavericks in Megaman X are self aware robots built in the image of an animal, but esstially robots, likehow x is built in the image of a human.
Also Japan started the whole furry thing and in asia mythical monsters are often animals taking form similar to human, occasionally having their original facial structure while having human body ratio.
