Silly question but when is the best time to start charging your 3ds?
I heard letting it drain completely is bad for the battery....
What i do is i game untill i see the blue light turn red then when its red ill charge it back to full , because when its red you still have an hour left till it completely dies.

When do you guys usually start charging?
Just curious...

I charge mine when it's on last blue bar. Most likely 1h of gaming is left, so I do not risk to fully discharge it.

If I'm actually playing through a game, I leave it charging whenever I'm not playing.

~blue bar?

i charge it when the red notification light starts blinking... sometimes i use it until it's dead, but if i am playing the game and i don't want to loose progress i just save and charge it to continue later

I think getting up to the last bar (15%) is enough to start charging. now if you get the blinking red led+red power light that means you have less than 5% left and need to run for your life to charge it.

The battery percentages in the 3ds are weird
4 blue bars= 100-60%
3 blue bars= 60-30%
2 blue bars= 30-15%
1 red bar= 15-5%
Blinking light= 5-0%.

EDIT: It's 30-10% at 2 Bars
10-5% at 1 Bar
5-1% when notification led blinks.

Modern Li-Ion batteries aren't nearly as picky as the rechargeable batteries of old. Anything but the cheapest crap from China will have overcharge and overheating protection circuitry, so there shouldn't be a safety hazard most of the time.
However, individual cells degrade a bit with each charge, so the cells hanging around 90-100% will charge slower. A lot of devices have firmware to circumvent this.

tl;dr Charge it whenever you feel like it.

It's actually
100-50,
50-35,
35-15,
15-5,
5-0.

Very weird.

I charge it every night.

According to PTM:GetBatteryLevel;
Output Values[edit]
These values are only reliable when no external power is connected.

Value State of charge
5 100~61% (4 bars)
4 60~31% (3 bars)
3 30~11% (2 bars)
2 10~6% (1 bar)
1 5~1% (notification LED blinks)
0 0% (as above?)

well I usually when it turn red or start bliking, is very few the times when it power down due to low charge (like it turned red while I was outside, I left in sleep mode and when I get home, it's turned down)

If it's almost full or in middle and I plan to go out to play, I charge it just in case
I never really counted how much the battery last but even with sleepmode seens like to be a "day" +/- maybe ny confs aren't the best attery saving ?but I don't let on the maximum XD
