Am I at serious risk of never being able to downgrade a brand new 3DS at this point (without hardmodding)?

I want to get a Monster Hunter machine but I just can't justify dropping £150/£170 on a new 3DS / new 3DS XL. It's almost as much as a PS4 and it doesn't even come with IPS displays (i'm assuming at this point they don't come with them).

What do you guys recommend? Who knows, maybe we'll see a price drop by Christmas.

Even if it is on >11.0 firm, it can still be downgraded with DSIWareHax although that requires a second system on CFW.

The chances of have IPS screens can vary, it depends on whether you're into the 3DS console scene and whatnot. For some people it's okay, others who may not be financially stable may not be able to afford, it's all down to the end user.

I mean, as a preamble to my post. I went through 4 Hyrule Editions and 2 Fire Emblem edition 3DS from Tesco Direct before taking a break from IPS hunting.

Man, I hate even admitting that...

I suppose for what it's worth. It's not that i'm financially insecure, I just don't think the console is worth that much money.

Are you asking about getting a "New 3DS" with the head tracking 3D or are you asking about getting a new to you 3DS? Because if its the latter, you can get a 2DS on the cheap.

Definitely after a new 3DS or new 3DS XL for the extra performance and homebrew :)

Ah ok. Curse Nintendo and their poorly thought out naming scheme. Then I say good luck to you. I never really cared enough to tell if my 3DS has or has no IPS screens, nor is money an issue to me, so I am not very helpful in this situation. Unless you want my honest opinion.

Man... brutal. Christ maybe I should grow up. I suppose I can buy a Majora's Mask housing from a Chinese Website and turn my 3DS into the ultra rare limited edition Majora's Mask version.

Why can't we buy replacement IPS displays yet? I can't even find them

Remember, I also dont know what your money situation is, how old you are ( I didnt look), nor how much a non-IPS screen bothers you. So take that with a grain of salt because that is what I would say to someone exactly like me. My guess is that you are on my equal footing, which is fine.

If you want the system mainly for playing Monster Hunter, I'd actually recommend an old model. The Circle Pad Pro (or CPP XL for the 3DS XL) feels a hell of a lot better for extended periods of play when compared to the N3DS and its nub.

Just my two cents there, you can get old model 3DSes pretty cheap. Just comes down to whether you feel you really need the extra power of the new models.

As someone who has both a o3DS LL and a n3DS LL, I think the o3DS is weighted better and feels nicer in your hands anyways. But the n3DS has head tracking and that little nub... for what games use it that is. I dont know, its a hard call.

Bro i felt the same as you about the tn/ips thing i also had both and i compared them both honestly if you look at it straight on like your soposed to with a handheld itll be very hard to tell which is ips and which is tn.
Now if u look at it from the side then you can tell but you dont play sideways do you? also ips uses 15 percent more power has ghosting, lines ,interlacing, glow and other problems tn never will get..
sure ips is more vibrant but looking straight on almost no difference and you get like 20% more battery life if you have tn, anyway long story short if you cant find a ips a tn new 3ds xl is still worth it mind you the smaller non xl doesnt even have ips and the game are fun no matter what id say get a 3ds and start gaming bro if not you are missing out,
It is expansive i know for 50 bux more you will have a ps4 but the games man the 3ds has a huge library with alot of great games that ps4 doesnt have, im rly into rpg and jrpg and strategy rpg / turn based the 3ds is the best for that

- You can downgrade n3DS XLes with another 3DS/2DS on cfw. Just buy Fieldrunners, pop in a modified save, and system transfer the lot to the stock n3DS. It even works on 11.2...
- Having owned/played with both IPS and TN systems, I can't tell the difference between the two. My personal preference is for TN (a little bit more juice out of the dismal battery life), but I know people who love their dual IPS units.
- Being a MH fan (no, I don't like Generations that much, I rather play 4U/3U again), I would say I like the little nub, but I also love my CPP. The CPP feels smoother and doesn't feel like I'm going to slip from the little nub.
- I've seen used "new 3DS XLes" for a cool $200. Usually these are totally updated units on 11.0/11.1/11.2. Get it downgraded by your local softmodder/hardmodder (maybe $40), and buy a decal/skin of Monster Hunter ($10). Pick up a 32/64 gb card for $25. That's like $275 Canadian there - $206 USD for all your gaming needs. (About 188 Euro.)

*You might be able to find a cheaper unit locally on your classified adverts*

I wonder if all TN displays and IPS displays are the same. I've got both and, to me, the difference is pretty noticeable. That goes double for when there are dark colors on screen.

Idk how it is in the UK, but on craigslist here n3dsxl's go for $100 to $200. I even managed to snag a Fire Emblem n3dsxl for $140.
