Nintendo has finally decided to show off their new "home gaming system", code-name NX. It's time to see what Nintendo has up their sleeves and put all the rumors to rest.

It's called the Nintendo Switch. Rumors are true, it's a tablet with connectable buttons that you can play at home and on the go. Console Controller looks similar to the Xbox One's. Has small little remotes and supports multiplayer. NBA game being shown. 3D Mario title. When you connect the portable controllers the system goes from console to portable. Skyrim and Splatoon shown. Still coming March next year.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. So I'm wondering. When BotW was shown on the TV, it was smooth, but when in portable mode, it was a little choppy. Would this be an indication of a low-powered mode, or could the dock supply a performance boost in the same kind of manner as was described in patents (the SCD)? If the latter, then perhaps this could lead to upgrading the dock.

what is up with that FUGE controller though? they expect people to use that thing?!
And what exactly is wrong with it. The fact that's it's transformerable, or that it's not Sony or Microsoft controller? I for one think it's a brilliant concept.

But local 2p with one hand held is genius.

then again since its costum they could have traded some flops for 32-bit floating points. Maybe down to 1.2 - 1.0

Yeah. And make the graphical quality shit. Because 16bit for AAA gaming just doesn't cut it, unless it is cel-shaded. And even that is a stretch.

the reasobn the dpad looks like that is, if you rotate both joycons so both have the clip upper, youll notice they are alike, the dpad becomes the ABXY button

Yes, and by a lot. Even assuming that the system ran a vanilla full-blown X2, NVidia boasts that the chip pushes about 1.5 Teraflops, which *seems* to be more than the Xbox One on the surface. What NVidia doesn't tell you is that that's an FP16 (16-bit floating point), not an FP32 (32-bit floating point) result like the One's, so the actual capability to push in-game graphics is slashed in half (two FP16 instructions equal one FP32 instruction), down to 750 GFLOPS, which is respectable for a portable device, but a far cry from the Xbox One. Another problem rises with cooling - the word on the street is that the X2 is a ~25W TDP chip last I've read, so using its full capabilities would require an active cooling solution. This is unlikely in a tablet, it's for automotive use, so the Switch will definitely have lower specs than that - probably in the range of 500GFLOPS to inch towards the 15W mark which is considered the top standard value for passively cooled chips, or 10W if they don't want to use a heatsink, which will sink performance further. Naturally we won't know the real power consumption and thermal profile until we see the chip and it can always be tweaked, but only at the cost of performance.
I thought that GFLOP number for the xbox one was in fp16 as well. Ah well, that's a bit dissapointing. I'm guessing it'll still be about double or so the Wii U though, eh? And maybe it'll be downclocked/less cores used while on mobile, and perhaps some cooling situation when docked? I know, a bit hopeful of me.

what i meant is that they changed the chipset up to support 32-bit while lowering the total tflops to aroun 1 to 1,2 tflops instead of 1.5 with 16-bit

I was thinking maybe it was because BotW just isn't finished yet, and on release it'll work just fine both in portable and docked mode, since they'd likely have optimized it more before release.
