Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

I loved what I saw but im still getting a PC if the support keeps up in 2 years ill consider picking one up.
A PC isn't really a competitor to this though...

Sure, this can play on a TV but it's also a handheld...

It's closer to an iPad or iPhone with a HDMI cable and Bluetooth controller...

Mind you, just because it is portable doesn't mean it'll automatically be weak in the graphics department... just look at how powerful the iPhone / iPad are as far...

The iPhone Plus models run games at 1080p for crying out loud...

the video kinda seems to overhype the portability of the tablet part, i mean, its still a huge ass thing you carry around there. and you'll probably still want to put something on or around it to protect the screen.

also inb4 the name doesn't imply its a new console enough!

I think it looks neat, design wise I guess, but I'm definitely waiting for some specs before I really decide on what I think. As mentioned, the Zelda game on the go looked like it played like trash which is disappointing. It's either going to have great hardware and shit battery life or shit hardware and sort of ok battery life.

Supposedly it switches performance, like 900P in tablet mode and 1080P when connected to the base station ramping up the clocks to pull full res and FPS. So I guess if you wanted max performance you would just play on a TV all the time?

That doesn't really matter...

Just because a system handles 3D doesn't mean it can't do 2D...

That was just them deciding to show off with the latest hardware... just like every system generation...
but you just said..and then you said...wat.

i just realized something

why is everyone complaining about the framerates when the video is only 30fps

And even at 30fps it looked choppy. Here's hoping it'll run smooth as butter by march.

So, you can remove the controllers, why didn't they attach them to mock plastic fake golfclubs and such already in the trailer, don't they have accelerometers?

Also with the controllers on your powergloves you need to put the tablet in your vr view holder.

Seriously, the social part of splitting up into two cute minicontrollers and playing co-op is the best part, and since it's there from day one it hopefully gets supports from most games.

That breath of the wild framerate concerns me. I can't help but shake the feeling that, if it were put in through post production as someone had suggested, they would've definitely taken the time to make it look pretty. The only reason I can think of as to why they left it looking like that is because they didn't want to give consumers a false impression of how the game runs.

Nintendo has ALWAYS been about providing a high framerate for their games... take a look at Mario Kart... they managed to do 720p 60fps...

They could have easily done 1080p at a lower framerate but they chose a higher framerate instead...
