Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

It'd be nice if they stated if it had backwards compatibility with Wii U games purchased on the eShop...

Or will it be like the Wii games on the virtual console...

Or their non-universal 3DS / Wii U games...

They hit all the points that people complained about with the Wii U
-the name is descriptive and unique
-no more long dry patches of games. mobile+home divisions are going to (hopefully) produce a more consistent stream of games for it
-If skyrim works, then the rumour it's very little work to port has a bit more merit...and it's going to get all those ps4 and one games
-power? ehh...who knows. we'll see.

A few concerns:
-zelda game on mobile looked a bit choppier than I'd like. the Wii u ports (mario kart, splatoon) seemed to run smoothly though...if those are even ports and not new games
-What are the file size limits/speeds of the card, and how are the ps4/one developers who rely on 50-100GB downloads going to function?
-I saw no motion control.

And that wasn't super mario 3d world in the video?

I have a feeling that the first day of the Switch's launch title will consist of Wii U games with the DLC already on it (the GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION) so Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and... maybe even Super Smash Bros 4 on day one? The low sale of the Wii U means that there will be a large number of people who hasn't played those games and will give those titles a shot.

But really, in three minutes they got the message out. It's a device that combines home console AND handheld all in one.

I also think the design of this is quite amazing. I didn't like the idea of the console/handheld hybrid, but I think the way they've pulled it off it actually looks great. Games on carts is an amazing bonus as I was fearful they were going digital-only. Hopefully there will be a way of transferring WiiU titles, either by eShop download or by transferring from disc to SD card or something. I'd even settle for a USB optical drive for Wii U compatibility when using it in console mode.

All this needs is VR, and I'm set for life. Or at least until next year. Also, I love the list of initial developers - Sounds like it could be a great lineup, and maybe an end to the death toll of the Wii U!

I'm not sure if this will be able to run Wii U titles :/ Look at the framerate for BOTW, I don't think this will be powerful enough

I'm not sold as much as I thought I would be. Hate the tiny side controllers, would probably never use it outside because it's huge. Who even games outside anyway? If you go out nowadays it's because you have to, for some chore or task or job. Were not in Japan, we don't meet up in the park to play Monster Hunter, we play shitty phone games at the doctors.
That said though I like the design in theory, but need to see a lot more before I get invested.

The frame rate on that portable Zelda o.o Just what I expected, and inferior tablet/portable mode. And that was the Wii U version of Splatoon and Mario Kart 8, don't get your knickers in a twist just yet! :rofl2: I hope they don't dumb down games just to run on the portable mode...

That's my guess why they made the leap in pokemon to make it completely 3d rendered.
That doesn't really matter...

Just because a system handles 3D doesn't mean it can't do 2D...

That was just them deciding to show off with the latest hardware... just like every system generation...

Life expectancy of pop-out rear stand: 37 seconds.

All joking aside, i think the whole thing, concept and execution is actually pretty cool. I don't own or intend to own a Wii U, but I might get this, it reminds me of Nintendo products of the past.

GC/Wii/Wii U portable B/C would actually sell a ton of these things.
