I had so many issues with retropie I swapped to recalbox and NO regrets.

I'm running RP3 with recalbox latest stable and it just works: perfectly!

Try running this at terminal:

sudo modprobe snd_bcm2835

and then testing the sound if works.

If it's a hardware issue switching won't resolve it, but honestly for anything else recalbox all the way!

Not to hijack a thread but recalbox.....is that just the same as Retropie? Could I install recalbox on a seperate microSD card and swap between Retropie on another microSD card using the same pi3?

Yeah I guess. Only benefit is reicast and a couple of other cores on retro as opposed to insane stability and ease of use on recal.
