Short : no.

<GeekShado> do the DVD player work for movies ?
<GeekShado> dvdx can be installed ?
<emu_kidid> dvdx couldn't on later wiis why would it work on vWii?
<GeekShado> so dvd video can't be played ?
<Ernest0> No
<GeekShado> and there was no workaround for dvdx ?
<GeekShado> what make homebrews doesn't have access to DVD while games can ?
<emu_kidid> GeekShado, "DVD while games can".
<emu_kidid> games are reading from Original DVD discs in vWii mode
<Ernest0> I think DVDx worked based on the wii dvd drive hardware
<emu_kidid> it did
<emu_kidid> they removed the commands later on
<GeekShado> emu_kidid, Ernest0 when I try to use mplayer the dvd player make some noises
<emu_kidid> GeekShado, probably a DVD Reset, tries to read the disc, but it can't for the reasons I stated above
<GeekShado> and in sneek mode would it be possible ?
<emu_kidid> no
<GeekShado> so in vWii asides games, channels doesn't have DVD access ?
<SifJar> it's a hardware limitation, not software
<emu_kidid> GeekShado, you can read ORIGINAL discs fine in anything on vWii mode
<SifJar> Wii DVDs are different to regular DVDs (e.g. video DVDs), and the disc drive used to support both, but in later revisions, the firmware removed the commands for regular DVDs
<Muzer> yes, video DVDs cannot be read in new Wiis. Full stop.
<Muzer> the ability to read video DVDs was a feature Nintendo added, not a bug
<Muzer> they just never used it themselves
<Muzer> they removed it from the drive firmware of later Wiis, and presumably the Wii U too.

so the commands were presumably removed then, as in nobody bothered to check if the Drive in the Wii U happens to have commands to read Regular DVD's? so why not confirm that the Wii U drive does infact lack the required commands then?

Doesn't WiiMC not need DVDx for DVD playback? Therefore it'd be very easy to test and see if it works in vWii.

your correct, WiiMC uses AHBPROT to directly talk to the drive itself now bypassing the need for DVDx. my guess is if dvd commands do work with the drive, they may be different then the commands WiiMC and other homebrew use with the drive since its a different drive then what a Wii uses. thats a big assumption based on if the Wii U drive even has DVD commands, which it likely would not since Nintendo removed it in later Wii drives even.

Wonder if we can access Wii U disc/Blu-ray from WiiMode...

most likely not bluray as it should have the same problem as trying to read dvd's. but if we could access Wii U disks via WiiMode, we do not have the Wii U common key to decrypt their contents.

If Nintendo had payed for Bluray licensing fees, the WiiU would work just like the PS3 in regards to Bluray compatibility.

Guess why WiiU discs are modified Bluray discs using the sameish tech, but different format? You got it right! It's the same situation as Wii discs vs DVD format.
