I dunno, lately I've been doing some thinking and I realized that deep down there's something that I dislike about Gateway. I own one, and I guess I enjoy the product, but there's always been something I disliked that I couldn't put my finger on.

In my time of confusion, I turn to the community. Where did Gateway go wrong? By this I mean, what did they do to really drive a stake through their own feet. I know it was really good for some time, but I'm starting to feel that spark less and less. Anything they could ever possibly do that's new and innovative will probably be reverse engineered and made free anyways.

So yeah, that's my question. Go nuts.

Gateway have obviously caused controversy with the whole bricking fiasco, using open source code etc., but none of that is the source of their woes.

The simple answer is that their product is no longer necessary or relevent. The free open source solutions now available have made their product no longer requires. It had a good run of a few years, and they probably deserve credit for continuing to support their product with updates.

The scene has simply grown.

They didn't get on top of a9lh fast enough or well enough. If they had a payload that worked with community methods right away and that had firm protection etc probably way fewer people would be selling their cards.
Even if they had. A9LH itself makes a flashcart fundimentally unnecessary. It's not really possible to make a convincing arguement to use flashcarts when CFW is now so advanced and comprehensive.

It's strange to say that things 'went wrong' for Gateway when they were the only solution for end users for around 2 years. They had a good run and sold lots of carts, but are no longer necessary - it's that simple.

Well I use Gateway over other methods. Mainly because I use multiple Micro Sd Cards for my games. I realize one huge size sd would work better, but at the moment this works best for me and I've never had problems with it. Where they went wrong, I don't really know. I have the same feeling, and I think what I don't like about it is the lack of features. It plays the games and has a good multi menu for choosing them, but that's it. They don't incorporate anything to distinguish them from free cfw. I think that's what I hate about them. They're content with where they are at, instead of trying to innovate.

That's a good way to wear out the SD slot in the long term, to be honest. The SD slots on flashcards are cheap.

I didn't know this. What open source codes did supercard claim as their own?
I think they stole from AuReinand but it was a while ago and I can't really remember

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

If Gateway wanted to start selling again I think they need to produce some extra cool features like more cheating or something else that isn't available through CFW alone. Then sell the carts for like $20 instead of $80. The cheat feature is great, the only problem is it isn't worth paying $80 for.

I don't switch them often. But another good thing about the card is trimming roms. I can't trim a cia install and if I can then that literally beats my reason for using this card.

To be clear, Gateway using A9LH itself doesn't constitute a source code licence violation. They're free to make their own A9LH implementation If they actually used code from other CFW however, then that obviously would.

It should hardly be a surprise if they did steal open source code, however. After all, their launcher even contains code from Nintendo.

They should just go opensource so people could implement the multirom code and allow the use of the red card on any CFW

But that would completely destroy their product, as well as pretty much the only thing hey have left going for them.
Or it will make their card sell because people would use it?

But people would buy the card. It just means they could expand their programming team from five to a hundred and not have to pay them. It's actually a great idea!

Well I guess that is where their CFW comes from.

Well, in order for GW to sell their cards as cheating tools they'd better offer options to integrate with the current CFWs. Mayby something like NTR which can be launched on the top of other CFWs. Considering the difference between GW's and community's a9lh, I just don't want to use my GW since I have to boot into GW Sysnand mode which has no nand protection.

This isn't going to happen, but I would like this. I've switched to Luma long ago, but still use the cart now and again as it essentially acts as an extra SD card slot.
