I thought it would be intresting to share some very diffcult games with the community. I don't think a lot of games present that much of a challenge unless your playing a really diffcult one by default,

Games on this list are mainly diffcult becuase they are hard. It's not becuase the enemy's are unbalanced, or ridculasly unbalanced to the point where the game is almost unplayable, the same goes with mechanics.
Notice - This will be opinioned based. It won't be based off of stats, or just generally how good, or bad you are at video games.

Here's my list;
Pixel Dungeon - The game offers a Stratgey based game off of survival. Your goal is to get to the bottom of the dungeon (50 floors I believe.) (10 for each stage.) To claim a prize to become "God" basically and rule humanity. This game has a lot of replay value, and I still enjoy it today (Been playing it for about two years.) I don't play it so othen but maybe I would be playing it once a month, or week at a time. This game is actually very diffcult, and is not as friendly to new comers. I othen had to research sometimes just to find out what the best way to kill something is. Including the bosses, and third enemy in game. It's not unfairly unbalanced it's just serverley diffcult if your not really used to RPG like games, and turn based/Stratgey based games.

Super Mario Advance 4/Super Mario Bros 3 - This game isint really hard. But once you get onto the other worlds (world 3 specifically.) You will start to notice the diffculty goes up slightly if your new to the franchise, I wouldn't say it's the hardest game but it's very diffcult to newer users, and even some experts. I othen times had to stop playing from reaching the "Game Over" Screen a few times to prevent myself getting frustrated over a video game.

Minecraft - Minecraft is one of my most diffcult games in my library so far, and I othen times had a hard time coming back to it sometimes. If your new to the scene and joined a server like "Hypixel", and played "UHC" you would probably know what I am talking about. Not only is Minecraft PvP hard but having to over come obstacles in the game in a modpack like Blight Craft, or Blood & Bones or in mini games like UHC, Mega Walls, or Survival Games. You can tell that just a simple game can sometimes be overwhelming or diffcult to play on a day to day basis without taking a break once in awhile.

Race the Sun - This game provides a "on the clock" feel. You are constantly rushed to race the sun. The only catch is you have to dodge obstacles while going about 200 - 300 MPH without crashing, and dodging objects all over the place. With the extended modes, and diffculty I had a blast playing this while always being challenged to get as far as I can. The steam community also provides some Mod's that make the game even more diffcult as well.

Terraria - Terraria was never intended to be a diffcult game when it was published. But a recent update was made to give it a harder diffculty named "extreme mode" take all the regular gameplay of Terraria and change the diffculty level to 200x it was, and play it on Hard Mode Diffculty. Yeah good luck getting through this game on your own.

Thought it might be worth mentioning to users really craving a challenge, and feel confident they can complete a extremely diffcult game on their own. List your hardest games down here below,

I've got to do this.
Darksouls - It's Darksouls.

But seriously, Terraria's Expert mode was insane. I wasn't expecting such a curve in, well, everything, and it didn't go very well.
Wait, Race the Sun is on Steam too? I thought it was just Playstation exclusive. Thanks for letting me know, in a way. :D

Super Mario 64 - I played this on the DS a long while ago, and the D-Pad did not make the game easy at all. I can't remember if I finished it or not. :(

Bloodborne - Yes, I said Darksouls earlier, but that wasn't serious. Bloodborne took some time for me to get used to, and it wasn't a fun time. Since it was my first 'Souls' game, it presented more of a challenge because I didn't know how anything worked. The bosses are mostly challenging, though some of them are just easy. Several bosses had me stuck for a while, but that was mainly because I wasn't trying to learn the patterns.

Vagrant story (my last played game)

Kind of unbalanced difficulty more than technical and challenging difficulty.
The issue is that you don't have exp, your weapon does. Weapon stats change based on attacked enemies (you hit a beast, your weapon become stronger against beasts, but weaker against human, ghost, dragon and devil) etc.
Each weapon is either cutting/piercing/hitting, along with elemental affinity (fire, water, light, etc., which also improve or weaken based on hit enemies affinity). You mix all these stats and see that you need an infinite combination of weapons to keep with you and switch the correct one based on the enemy's stats you are fighting. Each enemy has different body parts reacting with different affinities (head can be weak to hitting and water, arms to cutting and fire, etc.)
The only difficulty here is that ... you can hold only 8 weapons or weapon parts. You can't get a "cutting for human, cutting for beast, cutting for dragon" and "piercing" for each again, etc.
the same for all your equipment (shield, armor, etc.)

So, you end with a requirements that you can't sustain. You can't progress if you don't play the way developers decided, if you don't use the correct weapon at the correct time, if you don't keep a specific weapon to forge and fuse it with another specific one (and don't do any mistake, if you forge the wrong one you can't progress in the game anymore because you lost precious battle affinities).
So, the concept is nice, there is just not enough freedom. you have to play the same way than all other players and the way developers forced you to. No place to mistakes or you are making the game unbalanced by your own action.

Any shoot'em up ?
Shoot'em up can be very challenging. they are hard, but not unbalanced, it's only YOUR dexterity which will determine if you win or lose.
Latest I played : Furi (PS4), Geometry war 3. (both on second boss only haha)

Most difficult game?
GTA SA.

It somehow becomes so extremely buggy and frequently softlocks for me whenever I try and speedrun it.
Not to mention that every time I do a mission, the AI is starting to turn against me.
With every boot of the game, the RNG gets more ridiculous.
Bullshit NPC deaths, non-cooperating NPCs and soft/hardlocks just plague me.

Perfect example would be the Valet mysteriously dying in 555-We tip.
Another would be OG Loc.
Jeffrey just starts shooting at me after the cutscene where you killed Freddy (this is after I shot Freddy's bike to flames and let it explode at the first steep hill in the Los Vagos area)
Cops refusing to bust me when needed, hell I even had cops literally rob me of me vehicle that I robbed in front of their nose.
Saint Mark's Bistro, it takes an absurd amount of headshots to take down the mobster that's standing in the hallway to the kitchen (up to points where he's invulnerable)
Important NPC's dying due to other NPCs having a car chase with the cops or getting stuck (usually softlocks the game)
Planes crashing on your head (it's actually a intended feature in the game)
I can go on and on and on about how bad that game is.

YET!, it's one of the easiest games I ever played.

How about some extremely hard oldies?

Has anyone finished Championship Lode Runner for Famicom? This game is insane from the first level. I had it on cartridge and i've played it a lot as a kid. 20 years later i was trying to beat this game on emulator, but... NO WAY, Championship Lode Runner was created by devil.

Another one is Arkanoid (Famicom/NES). When you play it for the first time, it looks just like easy arcade game, you have to prevents a ball from falling, but level design made Arkanoid really reaaally hard. Everyone is able to go through the first stages (with three lives), but who is able to finish Arkanoid?

Word about shoot'em ups - Summer Carnival '92: Recca (Famicom)! This game is absolutely fantastic and hard as... as... as something hardest you've ever seen. :P When i finished Recca (on emulator, i've never had it on physical cartridge :( ) for the first time, i was so happy. And then... "To Be Continued...", oh well, i thought there will be another loop, maybe with harder bosses or something, but NO! After the soft reset, game gives me completely rearranged levels. Recca is definitely one of the hardest shmups i've ever played, and one of the best...

They fixed that with a title update.
Now the messed up graphics is a rare glitch that occurs.
However, the game suffers from unskippable cutscenes which normally are skippable, cutscene freezes (most noticeably when you blow up Ryders car in the mission Ryder)
Physics that suddenly get screwed up, mechanics that get sluggish.
Softlocked cars (more frequent then the original version)
AI that gets really confused at what their intention is.

The 360 version is beautiful (also came out on PS3)
It's like you've traveled back to '04 again.
But if you want to speedrun it, you're far better off on the original version.

Really that's pretty interesting maybe I should get around to finishing that version and for speedrunning I know the PC version is the best since load times aren't a thing pretty much

Put the game into a RAMdisk.
What are these "loadtimes" you speak off?

Xbox version is also quite good, PS2 version, despite the long loading, it's possible to get a decent time.

Probably Sans in Undertale and Battletoads, also almost any Fire Emblem, love the games but I just suck, I'm trying to get better! lmao

Though the thread is still active, I'll link to the most difficult game you've ever beat here. It may give some inspiration. :-)

The hardest game I still enjoy is most likely F-Zero GX, though super hexxagon is a strong contender. Oh, and perhaps Jamestown (bullethell shooters get pretty insane to begin with).

Race the Sun - This game provides a "on the clock" feel. You are constantly rushed to race the sun. The steam community also provides some Mod's that make the game even more diffcult as well.
Sorry, but I strongly disagree on this one: as far as racers go, this is the one game I would say is the most relaxing (aside from stuff like glitchhikers, obviously). It has soothing music, no enemy opposition and no end goal.
I agree the speed is pretty high and has instadeath, but this is a roguelike game. Once you've upgraded everything, handling is a lot smoother and it even has a bit of boredom to it (you can't catch up to the sun no matter what you try).

Twilight Princess Wii - I am a lefty which makes it very difficult and awkward
Smash TV - hard for me to dodge all the crap coming at me
DDR - I am by no means a dance or have the rhythm
Guitar Hero - see DDR
Megaman 2 - Very easy but flash man drives me nuts
Ghosts N series - All are hard to a degree

My list (?)
Hard and not fun

Ghosts'n Goblins - 2 times in a row, and it's hard. Oh boy...
SMB The Lost Levels - Don't want to talk about it. It bring backs bad memories.
Ninja Gaiden XBOX - Why 3D, why?!

Hard but enjoyable

Super Meat Boy - Beat the record! And SMB moves so smooth
The Binding of Isaac - Bosses? check. Random powerups? check. F.U.N? check. For me it's the best roguelike.
Demon's Souls - it's demon's.

Lost levels? I myself always found that actually decent on difficulty. What other Mario platformers have you played?

SMB, 3, world, and all the New series. 3d ones: Galaxy 1&2, 3d land, 64 and Sunshine.

Decent at them, but i'm more of a sonic guy.

the vram is one advantage when it comes to AI but ends up being slower even with that and really AI is the only use case that needs more than 12gb vram right now

    Interesting lol

I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

cyberpunk at 4k without DLSS/fidelityfx *might* exceed 12gb

but that game barely runs at native 4k
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding

AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that

least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling

i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling

even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
