Hi there,

I just sold my old 3ds xl. But before I did, I formatted it from within the settings menu (I did not have my SD card inside the 3ds during the format period).

I am about to buy a new 3ds xl, can I still transfer the saves from the cia games I had on my old 3ds to my new 3ds xl if I only have the SD card that I used with the old 3ds xl? In other words, I didn't format my sd that had all my cia games on it, is it safe to assume that my saves and cia games should still be there when I put it in my new 3ds xl after I install arm9 cfw? I hope I did not make a grave mistake as I put tons of hours into my games.

Thanks.

Did you, at some point, dump the XORpads from the 3DS that you sold? If not, you won't be able to decrypt the files (so, the saves) that are in the '/Nintendo 3DS' folder.

No, i didn't actually. Is there no way at all to access them? I was using emunand with gateway if it matters. Is there nothing at all that I can do? I really want my saves :(

Given that saves are tied and encrypted to an individual console and you didn't dump the XORpads I don't think there's any way you can recover your saves.

oh nope, not without access to the 3DS and a copy of the emunand used to play the games, have you already sent it to the buyer?
I already sent it to the buyer; it was on craigslist in fact so it's long gone. I still have have the SD card that I used for emunand with the old 3ds if that helps?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

So save data filer won't be of any use now? Sorry, I didn't buy the new 3ds yet so I can't test anything out for myself yet. Me actually losing all my saves is very demotivating. I don't even feel like getting one anymore honestly.

nope, all the data is per device encrypted, you could beg the buyer to dump the xorpads for you if you had a contact number, i think just the nand xorpad would do so you could decrypt the emunand and retrieve the movable.sed, from there i think you could manually trasfer everything to the new 3DS

Is this still possible even though he is using a different SD card (he still plans to use gateway emunand). What would I have to tell him exactly to go about doing this? I don't think he is techy enough to dump xorpads. I do have a backup of my nand for that 3ds if that changes anything as well.

one sec lemme look for a guide, iirc all you need to decrypt the SD contents is the movable.sed file from the nand used to encrypt it, (in your case the emunand you still have, to get this you would need the ctrnand xorpad, hopefully someone will be able to confirm/debunk this idea

read up here

its by no means a simple task, but that guide seems pretty well put together

So The nand.bin that I extracted with gateway back on the day actually might come in handy? Oh God please yes. Thanks a ton. You gave me hope gamesquest1

good luck ^_^
I'm confused, does that entire guide need to be followed? I'm confused. Will part A up to number 6 suffice for my case? I can't really follow this guide so I don't expect the buyer to. He looks too damn lazy t go through something this long.

Edit: I don't mean to be of bother, but honestly, I'm pretty desperate to get these saves back.

all you need from him is for him to run decrypt9 and choose "xorpad Generator Options"->"CTRNAND padger" unfortunately the file is a bit on the large size so it takes about 30 mins or so to generate i think, and is about 700mb which he would need to upload, from there i think you can skip some steps as you probably dont care about streetpass progress etc

This is all he needs to do exactly? That's not too bad, the issue becomes that he has to install ninjahax to install/run decrypt9 right? I guess I can offer him a few bucks to motivate him. Is there an easier way I could get this individual to run decrypt9? and to be clear, There is no need for him to do a nand dump or for me to send him a copy of the nand backup I made back in the day?

afaik the impression from that guide is that just the xorpad to decrypt your existing emunand is what you will need, or else you would need to send him your emunand backup and all the SD contents, he would then need to write the emunand backup to his SD then run decrypt9 and let it decrypt all the sd cards files, then send them back to you decrypted.....so its either he has all the workload or you do, i assume if you give him a big load of work he would probably not want to do it, but just generating the xorpad should be enough.....as i said hopefully someone else can confirm this will work as i describe as i havent done it personally, but afaik it should work fine

@placebooooo Although you mentioned that the buyer plans on keep using a GW EmuNAND, I don't know how knowledgeable they are about the 3DS hacking scene, so just in case: don't forget to remind them to NOT update past 9.2 (I'm assuming it was not A9LH'ed). Otherwise it will make it impossible to run Decrypt9 (and the GW EmuNAND).
