Hello,

I have 2 New 3ds with firmware 9.2.0.20U, I have been reading for few days on how to install a cfw
keep in mind that I am completely new to this. I have never done anything related.

I know most people will just link me to the guide and unfortunately it's written in a way that is confusing for first timers, it also says that it can brick easily if a step is bad yet the way it's done or at least for me seems to assume I already know a bit of it, I am not trying to offend anyone, I am just being honest as I also showed it to someone I know for help and it was the same for him so I knew then it was not just me :)

Anyways to make it short, I need help with the following:

1- what cfw do I need? is there a "Complete" n00b guide or video that is not confusing for real first timers? maybe someone can send their own step by step guide they did :)

note: I read the n00b luma3ds guide and maybe I am dumb but doesn't seem like it's for first timers n00b to me.

2- Just be patient with me and remember when you were also a n00b :)

Thanks for any help in advanced!

first, don't follow videos, follow plailect's guide.
you need luma3ds. you can either use menuhax+luma3ds, (slow and unreliable way) to boot your cfw or a9lh(arm9loaderhax) which loads the hacks before boot, is faster and offers brick protection. the downsite is that menuhax takes about 30 minutes to setup and a9lh like 4 hours. if you want I can help you setup cfw, just PM me

Just follow https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki from Step 1 and READ everything.

Go through step by step, ask questions if you get stuck or are confused. There isn't anything else we can help you with if you can't help yourself.

First of all you should get a homebrew entrypoint for your FW, since you have a N3DS with 9.2 FW, the ideal method would be browserhax.
To install it follow this precisely : 1. Change the date to January 1, 2000, Change the time to 00:00 (Very Important - Do this before turning on the wifi)
2. Put the contents of http://smealum.github.io/ninjhax2/starter.zip onto the root of your card
3. Change your themes 2-3 times and the default to stock one.
4. Open browser, go to settings(of browser) and click initialize savedata.
5. GoTo http://yls8.mtheall.com/3dsbrowserhax_auto.php or scan this on your 3DS

qrcode.png

6. Your console should load the homebrew menu, Open the menuhax_manager application,
7. Press A to install, it may show some errors but that's fine as long as it shows "Success" towards the end
8. Go back to the main menuhax_manager menu, then select "Configure/check haxx trigger, Press A to continue, then select "Type1",
9. Hold down on the L Button, then tap the touch screen; this is the recommended button to use for launching menuhax
10. Go back to the main menuhax_manager menu, then press B, followed by Start to exit back into the Homebrew Launcher, Use the Start button to reboot
11. Now hold L when booting/rebooting the 3DS to check if you can enter HBL through MenuHax

Once you have accomplished, the rest is easy..... (A9LH is another story altogether), more to come just wait :)

Once you have accomplished this, the rest is easy..... (A9LH is another story altogether), more to come just wait :)

Once you have set this up,

Download this :- https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/releases/download/v5.4/Luma3DSv5.4.7z (Latest LumaCFW Release)
You should use Luma because its currently the best CFW for 3DS, it supports GBA,DS and DSi loading... (patches), sig checks, support for NTR, A9LH support etc... and is very stable and robust (it has a lot other features too...)

Extract this and put the Green and Pink folder and the luma folder to the root of your SD

If you want to use NTR, you need firmware.bin from this archive, copy it to the luma folder. ( I suggest using this...)

folderlist.png

Now boot MenuHax and click the Luma Icon

Because you are booting Luma3DS for the first time, you will be greeted with the configuration menu.

lumconfig.png

Here Tick :- region/lang emulation, show current NAND in sys settings, show GBA boot screen and uncheck all others

If you want to open this configuration menu again, simply hold the SELECT button

Now open system settings, if you are successful you will see a "Sys" in front of your FW no.

If all goes well now you have LumaCFW on your N3DS sysNAND

From here, There are two branches you can go :- 1. Set up EmuNAND/RedNAND with updated FW for CFW capabilities
2. Set up the glorious :) A9LH for updated sysNAND :) (Highly Reccommended)

Either way you will have to set up redNAND and the howto will come shortly.

Changing the date isn't necessary on versions between 9.0.0 and 9.8.0.
Whoops, missed that fact, still better safe than sorry :)

Yep everything's the same the browserhax and menuhax payload(hax) files are downloaded automatically when they are first run so no need to worry about regions. Also CFW's are region-free.

The RedNAND :-

Alright this is the part where we create a redNAND

Warning : This process deletes all your saves, games, photos etc.... (involves formatting the 3DS), so back up everything and if you want a HBL compatible save manager https://gbatemp.net/threads/save-data-manager-and-editor-for-firmware-up-to-9-9.396245/ is a good choice.

So to get the process :-

You need NTR firmware.bin installed for this (cause plailect says so)

The root of your SD should look like this (I like to keep things clean...., delete the files not listed in the image) yes there is no Luma3DS folder there - we are updating that....

sdpr1.png

Then delete everything except the folders given in pic below from you 3ds folder

sdpr2.png

now put the contents of https://gbatemp.net/attachments/filesrednand-zip.50384/?temp_hash=6117c4d465ddb795e983c462bfb6f07c in your 3ds folder

It should look like this :-

sdpr3.png

and now put the Luma3DS folder from this zip
https://gbatemp.net/attachments/luma3ds-zip.50386/?temp_hash=6117c4d465ddb795e983c462bfb6f07c to your 3ds folder (this is because luma has a large update overdue) and replace the dat file on root with this one https://gbatemp.net/attachments/dat-file-zip.50387/?temp_hash=6117c4d465ddb795e983c462bfb6f07c

Put these files in root of your SD Card : The 2 slotkeys from this page : https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-3-(RedNAND)

Backup every file on your SD card to a folder on your computer, all files will be deleted in the next step - Important

Now reboot 3DS, go to HBL and open EmuNAND9 (This can sometimes take a few tries)

Then,

  1. Select the "Complete RedNAND setup" option
  2. Ignore the starter.bin prompt and press A to continue
  3. Confirm and wait for it to finish
  4. Press Select on the main menu to eject your SD card
  5. Now if you want to make your SD Name something else than "EMUNAND9" you can do it by formatting from windows just enter the label name as something else like "3DS-SDCARD", windows only cares about first partition so it wont do anything to redNAND (the 1GB space your SDCard is missing - where your sysNAND clone resides)
  6. Now copy all your backed up files back into it
  7. Get into the Homebrew Launcher through the entrypoint of your choice
  8. Open Luma3DS (this can sometimes black screen, just try again)
  9. If you boot into the home menu, you have successfully launched RedNAND or not....
  10. To confirm open system settings and check whether Sys or Emu is shown before FW Ver.
  11. If Emu is shown before FW Ver. congratulations you have successfully launched emuNAND
  12. Now exit system settings and get to HBL via MENUHAX
  13. Open TinyFormat , Press Y to format your SysNAND (Don't worry, everything is still saved on RedNAND)
  14. Go through initial setup without linking your Nintendo Network ID, you want it to remain linked only to RedNAND to prevent issues
  15. Reinstall menuhax on SysNAND as the format will have removed it
  16. Now create a folder on sysNAND with the name $ - Yes "$" so that you can know that your in sysNAND if you see a folder with $ written on it.
  17. Now boot redNAND (check if you are in redNAND by looking for the $ folder, now also create a folder like you did in sysNAND, only this time name it £ for emuNAND
  18. Now open sysSettings to see Emu in front of FW Ver.
  19. Congragulations now you have unlinked NAND's - a redNAND and sysNAND
  20. Now update emuNAND to latest version.

As your 3DS is setup right now, you must launch Luma3DS from the Homebrew Launcher every time you want to boot RedNAND, if you want to boot into CFW SysNAND by default instead of having to use RedNAND you must use A9LH - This decision is upto you :)

If you want to continue using this setup I recommend you inject FBI 1.4.17 into H&S app and install FBI latest (2.x) and HBL.cia via injected FBI for your hombrew, cia, and other hacky needs.

If you are ready to use A9LH/ Decide to stick with redNAND - Pls tell what you will do so that I can write rest of the guide - be warned though A9LH is exhausting for the first time

3. Change your themes 2-3 times and the default to stock one.
Thank you for this little bit of information. I was having trouble getting Browserhax to work. I never thought that my Persona Q theme might be causing the problem, because neither Plailect's nor Yellows8's mentioned that you apparently need to be on the default theme. Browserhax and Menuhax are now installed just fine. I tip my hat to you, good sir.

Wow, thanks a lot I will be reading carefully and try to understand all that.
Don't worry, take your time, I will be slow in doing this I will read couple of times first :)

Note: I have never done any themes or anything to the N3ds! do I still need to change the
theme 2-3 times?

1- I have never use wifi in these N3ds!! just connect to wifi normally or do I need a special
setup so the N3ds doesn't want to auto update when it sees internet connection?

2- At what point do I put the date and time back to normal?

3- If I want NTR? I don't know what that is :) do I need it?

4- To tick or uncheck, is that done with the pen, or button? :) I just don't want to press
wrong button or do something wrong, better make sure.

5- After lumacfw, why do I need something else? I thought that was the CFW I needed?

thanks,

1. No, it just downloads them, it doesn't install them.
2. Yes. But you don't need to change the time on 9.2 xD.
3. I don't know if you want that, but with ntr cfw you can take screenshots, stream your gaming footage to a pc and record it (yes, just like a capture card) and many more things.
4. Your choise.
5. Cfw isn't permanent, you have to restart it every time you shut down your 3ds.

thanks,

1. No, you don't need anything special since you are on 9.2 (that date ting was for 9.8 and up, I forgot that)
2. You can put it back to normal now if you want, but your system will be formatted anyway while setting up redNAND
3.
I don't know if you want that, but with ntr cfw you can take screenshots, stream your gaming footage to a pc and record it (yes, just like a capture card), enable cheats and many more things.
4. You use the A button for ticking and unchecking, after your done press START to save and reboot, this info is given on the config screen.
5. You will have to use MenuHax everytime to launch luma, as @einhuman197 said CFW is not permanent, you have to restart it everytime you restart your 3DS, or access System Settings (Pls do not update your 3DS)
6. If you need permanent, boot-time CFW which runs everytime you boot your 3DS automatically and use updated sysNAND you need A9LH, of which I will get to in a while.

And yes you have to change the themes 2-3 times - this s necessary for hax to work.

Thanks lot Ncorp, is ok for now, that second part is already super overwhelming for me.
I will take my time in reading it a lot times and try first with 1 N3DS when I feel sure I understand a bit.

I have 2 brand new Samsung 64GB EVO UHS-1 Micro SDXC
is that ok to put in N3DS for this setup?

Again thanks for your time I really appreciate all this.
I am pretty sure you are also helping a lot others with this steps :)

Thanks, I guess I have to ask about saving the data/saves.

I will need to know how to install /use that save manager you linked
but that will not need to be for now, since it will take me long time to understand
all this. :)

the n3ds comes with a 4gb micro sdcard, when I change it to 64gb,
do i need to save something from the 4gb first? is that where the saves are?

"Go through initial setup without linking your Nintendo Network ID"

I have never did an account or go online or anything with this n3ds,
just bought games and put in, that is it. So I think I don't even qualify
to be a n00b, is there anything before a n00b? that will be me! lol

Note: after I do the homebrew channel, do i need to go there all the time
or is it ok to boot the n3ds into normal too?

  1. Well about the save manager, I really don't know much cause I use this CIA Save Manager :- https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-jks-savemanager-homebrew-cia-save-manager.413143/ , You could poke around a bit in the save manager thread and ask/read how it works and what kind of games do you have on your 3DS, if they are all cartridges the saves will remain even intact even if you format your 3DS, Source : My "Story of Seasons pre A9LH" save was playable even after A9LH on the same 3DS.
  2. You just format the new 64GB SD in fat32 format with 64kb clusters and everything will be fine, also you can backup your game saves (you only need to backup game saves and only if you need them) from the 4GB card directly or do it from the 64GB card too (you have to just put the files in your old card to the new card to transfer data of the 3ds to a larger card)
  3. You never even accessed the e-shop or bought any games digitally :O, if you only have cartridge games there's no need to backup anything, forget about savemanagers B-)
  4. And yes you have to access HBL every time to go to CFW mode until you have A9LH.
Sorry for rate reply had some IRL things to do yesterday...... :)

THIS GUIDE
has everything that you need.

Just follow https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki from Step 1 and READ everything.

Go through step by step, ask questions if you get stuck or are confused. There isn't anything else we can help you with if you can't help yourself.
