I was told by the friend who helped me setup gateway that going online can result in a bricked 3ds, as I do not want this to happen, I've played offline thus far, but It'd be nice to be able to go online now and then with certain games, anyone know if this is possible with gateway, and how?

No going online doesn't brick you, but to play online you have to have a legit version of the game first. I am being serious. To play online you need to have a legit version of the game. If you go online right now then you will be banned. By having a real game cart you can use the information of that cart on your .3ds.

Your friend is an idiot (or very young) you need to patch your roms with a private header before going online you can use this http://scene.releases.free.fr/tools/download.php?dl=GRP_v1.2 to patch your roms.

Thanks Xenon, so if I setup an internet connection, will my 3ds automatically try to connect to eshop to update though?

If you've setup Emunand and have the latest 3.7.1 launcher you can boot Gateway mode and enter system settings, if you see GW3D before your version string you can perform a system update while in system settings. Do not back out of it at any point as you may update Sysnand (your 3DS).

Just for my tiny monkey brain: launch gateway mode
enter system settings
internet settings
make a connection, connect to the net
and i should be fine as long as i do this in gateway mode? but does this mean i'd be screwed if i turn my 3ds off at some point, then boot it back up? (i use the zelda cart method), I mean, since i have to boot it back up without being in gateway mode, so wouldnt it try to connect and update my sysnand then?

you can used installed cias too but the installing takes longer but you dont need headers
So cias dont require headers in general?

Correct boot gateway->system setting->confirm GW3D->system update.
No you can boot into Gateway mode many other ways your Sysnand will be untouched

Also CIA's do no use headers but as a precaution dont go online with out of region game regardless.

wait so I should do a system update while in gateway mode you're saying?

and what do you mean "many other ways and it'll be untouched"-- do you mean it wont force update if i turn off/ then turn on my 3ds later to play something ?

I simply gave him a noob answer. If I told him about private headers either way he would be confused. I didn't have any links on me though.

If you don't have the time to give a proper answer, why bother answering? Derp? Just let someone else give a real, proper answer instead of looking stupid and confusing people.

Come on guy I can't be more specific. Boot Gateway mode, go to system setting, confirm you see GW3D, then other settings, and do a system update.

Oh please stay out of this. Don't respond to this I am doing something more important than arguing with people.

I'm just asking as to why i should do a system update, is it because that's the only safe way of doing it- while in gateway mode?
