n3DS xl user here reporting successful downgrade to 2.1 (via sysUpdater injected into health and safety using decrypt9), dump of otp, restore to 9.2 backup (w/o cartridge), and install of arm9loaderhax. Being able to coldboot directly to reiNand is pretty sweet!

This was all done w/o a hardmod.

Is the otp that important for the end user yet? or should I wait until it's somewhat safer?

At the moment only Reinand uses it on New 3DS (and nothing does on O3DS). In the future though, you can reasonably expect things similar BootMii (a Wii program that was similar to a9lh, it installed into NAND at a low level and provided NAND backup support as well as running homebrew or booting into the system menu) or new boot managers to show up. So right now, there's not a lot of point unless you want a quicker boot time (as well as 100% boot rate) into Reinand, and be prepared for good stuff in the future.

If its not that important yet, I'll wait until I get a hardmod for my n3ds before attempting

Works for me, but, how I have hardmod I ignore the steps for emunand and I make everything in sysnand.

not format and other steps, only downgrade, mod fat16 partition from nand2.1brick with 3dsfat16 (more heather o3ds), and rewhite the nand2.1fix in new3ds. XD dump otp.bin.

rewrite original nand.bin and install a9hl.3ds, finish XD

I used my own pack (built on 1.0.0E + added 2.1.0E cias) on n3ds without hardmod.
It's easier than it seems

you can do it, just make sure u never miss a certain step... i suggest that u have 2 sd card for faster transition of sd's

IF you do it Format Sysnand and quadruple check your downgrade packs, bricked one of mine right after the 2.1 Downgrade(Might have something to do with not formatting sysnand)
Thanks for the encouragements! Do I have to compile anything along the way?

Bricked emuNAND. Downgraded in RXTools,Julian SysUpdater (NATIVE_FIRM install at the end) and in downgrade function. It wont boot. Im restoring it and retrying.
PS: If i downgrade a emuNAND successly, can i write it directly to system NAND?

I've gone through the whole thing 3 times, and every time my sysNAND is bricked after the downgrade. Black screen on boot. I restore my original sysNAND with a hardmod and try again, but it never works. What could be wrong?
are you doing the hex editing correctly?
