I just bought a N3ds that has 9.9 on it. From what i've been reading I need to update to 10.3 to downgrade to 9.2 (to avoid soft brick) my question is how do I upgrade to 10.3 without going all the way to 10.5 with the system update?

Thanks in advance

I think the only way to update to 10.3 would be using the same software you'd downgrade with, but that'd be pointless.

What region is your 3DS from?

Thats what I was thinking, I've seen guides for 10.3 downgrading to 9.2 but I cant find anything for 9.9 and when I do everyone says to upgrade to 10.3 to avoid the soft brick. lol

It does appear that being on 10.3 reduces the risk of a brick. However, there have been plenty of cases of people successfully downgrading from 9.9. It's up to you to decide whether or not it's worth the risk. If you do attempt a downgrade from 9.9 to 9.2, here are my suggestions:
  • Use SafeSysUpdater to check the update files first without actually downgrading
  • Use Julian's sysUpdater to do the actual downgrade
  • Run sysUpdater from menuhax instead of browserhax. Other entry points might be better than browserhax, too.
  • Make sure you have the correct settings in your Internet Settings in case you need to connect to the internet to recover from a soft brick. Also make sure you do not have Tubehax DNS in use.

This can be fixed even with a softbrick.
My understanding is a person might only be able to access Recovery Mode after a botched downgrade, and if the internet settings are not correct or Tubehax DNS is still enabled, one might not be able to connect to the internet and recover. Am I mistaken?

If you get a connection error in safe mode, you get an option to go where you would go by clicking Internet Settings is mset.

There hasn't been a single solid proof that beign on 10.3 gives you less softbrick chances , Updating to 10.3 would be just taking the risk twice

In case you bought it second handed , I'd recommend you to format your system first

That guide is fine, but I would also check your files with SafeSysUpdater, and I would use Julian's build of sysUpdater.
Seems like an extra step, is using a different sysUpdater really all that important?
Is Julian's build more safe somehow?
I'm asking this because I've done successful downgrades with SafeSysUpdater.

The reports of Julian's build being more successful than SafeSysUpdater are purely anecdotal. I was just saying what I would do. I've also used Julian's build twice with no problems.
