Hacking Installed game .cdi but it crashes at launch. "An error has occurred, forcing the software to close"

Hi all, I hope this topic is specific enough for its own thread.. I'm going to try to quickly rundown my steps to give all the info possible.

Started out on 10.3.0-28u. I installed HBC using browserhax...then menuhax. From there I downgraded to 9.2 using this how-to http://pastebin.com/ZfA8wtA2

Once downgraded I got rxTools 2.6 installed, and FBI.

Next I my 3DS rom (majora's mask in case it makes a difference) and I converted it to .cia using this method

Used FBI via the health & safety to install the .cia, restarted the 3DS, ran rxTools, booted rxMode on emuNand, unwrapped the 'present' icon, it revealed the game, I click it to run it.. it tells me there is a software update, but I just hit a to skip passed that and boot the game anyways, The game starts to boot (I can tell because the majora's mask load screen with the little logo in the corner shows up) but then after a few seconds it crashes back to the home menus with "An error has occurred, forcing the software to close."

What could be causing this? I have a feeling there may be some steps I missed.

What is the current safe way to update the software (and the firmware version on emuNand for that matter)?

For whatever reason this who process has been super tricky for me, and this is coming from someone who has done softmods on PS3's, a number of both hard and softmods on Wii's, vWii on my WiiU, etc... Hopefully I was just having a foggy brain day and (with help) I can get this all sorted out...

I think you have to install a US majoras mask cia to make it work because I used to have the same problem I was trying to play a European one but then decided to install a US one to make sure and it worked. I would also recommend updating your rxtools and using one of the nightlies they work fine.

As a matter of fact I am trying the EU version of the game! So that's probably it.
As for updating rxtools, I'd read that there were bugs in the nightlies so I didn't want to deal with any unneeded hassle on my first go at things...
I'll try a different game version and update rxtools...

As for updating the emuNand, is there a need to? I'd read that some games require you to be on a more recent FW.. but if its not a game(s) I care about I wont worry about it right away (unless its easy then I may as well do it and get it over with!)

I have been using rxTools nightly for a while and have yet to have any problems same with majoras mask euro cia it plays perfectly for me.
