I have a o3DS XL on firmware version 8.1.9-18U and I have been trying browserhax for the past day and a half with no success. I keep getting to the gray screen after clicking the slider and then my 3DS does nothing. I can still use some of the functions of the browser after the gray screen doesn't do anything. I can zoom in and out scroll around the page and can even leave the browser, however it freezes when I do. No matter what I do I cannot get browserhax to work. What would you all recommend
browserhax doesnt work on 8.x afaik, your best bet is to use rxTools/launcher.dat files to update to 9.x and work from there
edit: the emunand9/decrypt9 (I forget which one it is, both dump sysnand.bin last time I checked) launcher.dat will work for backups

yes, but you would need a hardmod to recover from the bricking (you can probably find a tutorial or someone offering services on here).
Shit, I am pretty skeptical about this whole process since my friend and I followed the directions perfectly and ended up bricking two 3DS already via sysUpdater. One was a downgrade and one was an upgrade, which we have the NANDs backed up for, but each time sysUpdater didn't work properly due to an issue with one of the CIA files, despite making multiple checks to make sure the MD5 and everything matched the tutorial. Anyone care to share their opinion of success rate, because depending on it I will hold off till I get the hardmod
I successfully downgraded both my o3ds and n3ds without major issues. If you have experienced issues before, since you have your nand backed up, I would recommend trying to update to 9.x with sysUpdater, then if it fails, get a hardmod. (make sure that the nand.bin is not corrupted beforehand (just dump it again and compare md5s), I don't think this has been an issue for many people before, but better safe than sorry)
Thank you for all of your help ih8ih8sn0w. Just to verify what you said. I should take the NAND backup I have and make another backup and compare the two NANDs for consistency. Then try one of the upgrade processes and if it bricks then I can purchase a service for someone to hardmod my system? Or should I get it hardmodded before I try the upgrade. Did you use rXTools for all of your upgrades/downgrades? Because I am skeptical to use sysUpdater again
rxTools is a cfw so it doesn't downgrade, it just allows you to run unsigned code/emunand (for the sysUpdater cia) which was what i originally thought was your only goal. Hardmodding is useful if a brick occurs, but you would still either have to have good soldering skills or pay to ship it to someone and have them install a hardmod. So getting it before or after mainly depends on if you want to wait some time without a ds before updating or waiting if a brick happens. For downgrading, I used the jan 4th (based on the date of the files in the zip I downloaded) build of sysUpdater. (for anyone reading this in the future: use safesysupdater, its better, i have never looked at it, but trust the name) If you don't want to get a hardmod just yet but want cfw, you might be able to launch rxtools on 8.x and install an outdated menu settings to launch rxTools/launcher.dats without the internet and update emunand
I may be under the wrong presumption, but my goal was to upgrade my firmware to 9.2 then install CFW, which I presumed I needed to be on 9.2 to install CFW. Being that I was to install CFW on my 3DS is the process just the More-or-Less Catch-All tutorial or something similar. If so I will continue my updating and modding tonight and look into hard modding at a date in the very near future, which I look to purchase the service offered by hundshamer
You can run rxTools CFW without updating. Follow this guide.

The sysNAND update to 9.2 is purely optional. If you're content with using the browser and/or MSET to launch rxTools, then you can keep your sysNAND on 8.1. If you want a more convenient method of launching rxTools at boot, then your sysNAND needs to be on 9.0-9.2 in order to run menuhax.
Upgrading with sysupdater is much, much more consistent than the downgrading one. You shouldn't brick as long as you follow directions properly. Be very careful that you update through Dev Mode/PastaCFW and not RxTools SysNAND or Gateway SysNAND, because that will brick you if you attempt to update with those CFWs.
