  • Get the JAP N3DS, it's not going to be *that* hard to find your way around.

Hello all. I'm an American, who knows very little Japanese. I currently own a 2DS, and my fiancee owns a 3DS. Both of which I recently downgraded and then put CFW on. I want to get an N3DS for myself, primarily for doing homebrew stuff on (specifically emulators and such). However, the N3DSXL that we have over here seems a bit too big, and I like the Super Famicom-style buttons on the smaller N3DS.

I was looking around on eBay and a japanese N3DS seems to go for reasonable prices. I could not, through a quick search, find a european N3DS. So here's my question, which N3DS should I get?

My worry is that, even though you can change your system's region on emuNAND, If I get the japanese one I'll be too confused by all the japanese text on the sysNAND to find my way through the menus so that I can install CFW and such in the first place.

I've also heard stories that downgrading a japanese N3DS (should I need to do so) is more difficult than downgrading a US/EUR one.

So, see poll. More detailed input is appreciated.

You do know that the smaller N3DS model is now officially available i the US now right? There is no need at this point to get a European or Japanese model unless you really want one of those models for some reason.

Didn't know it was officially out in america, Thought it was just limited edition bundles like the animal crossing and pokemon bundles that are only in america and not the system separate by itself with normal colors.

Get a N3DSXL unless you want faceplates. All 3DS's out of box at this point can be downgraded or hacked, and let's say you brick just return it saying you did a system update the 3DS froze and now it wont turn on.

The regular New 3DS *is* technically available in North America, but not many people are willing to invest in the Animal Crossing bundle just to get the regular N3DS.

>invest

$20 more really isn't much if you're already spending $200. It's worth it if it's the hardware you want.
Or wait for the $200 pokeman bundle and it's the same price + goodies.

I didn't know that. But if it's $220, it's still cheaper to get a japanese N3DS off ebay (going prices seem to be about $180?)... I guess $40 to not have to deal with regionchanging? Hmm. Not really a huge fan of Animal Crossing though, so that faceplate is kind of not my bag.

Well... Hmm, I guess the ability to return it is a plus, but I really just don't like the size of the XL. I mean part of the reason I want to get the New 3DS along with having a faster system for homebrew and the like is because my 2DS really doesn't fit in a pocket, and having used my friend's N3DSXL it's also kind of large for carrying around in a pocket.

I guess the conclusion to come to is "Save up the extra $40 for the animal crossing bundle"?

Doesn't look like I can just get a pair of white faceplates though...

Looks like nintendo online store is selling some turqoise faceplates for not too much. That's considerably less "loud" than the ones that come with the animal crossing bundle at least.

(Sorry for the double post, edit was freezing for some reason)

you could get the animal crossing one and buy any faceplate off ebay/amazon, i think any faceplate fits them, me personally i have held out on getting a n3ds until this pokemon bundle got announced, then i had to get one, if i was you id pre-order the pokemon and just wait a month

Honestly given my budget the pokemon one will probably be out by the time I can actually afford the $200-some-odd. So yeah, might as well plan on getting that one.

Also, I actually have an American N3DS I may be willing to sell. PM me if you have questions.

tho one thing i could say i kinda worry about is if the pokemon n3ds will come with a newer version (eg 10.4) or if it will still have 10.3 on it, honestly think 10.4 will be out before it is released but they could already be sent from nintendo packaged and all just sitting in warehouses waiting to be shipped on release

I think it's safe to say they'll come no higher than 10.3
