Sony working on PS2 backwards compatibility for PS4

With the release of the PS4 Star Wars: Battlefront bundle came an interesting discovery. Some of the bonus games in the bundle (Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter) aren't just remasters, nor just direct ports. It seems that they're run via an emulator on the PS4, allowing PS2 games to run at a higher framerate and resolution compared to their original releases. An article from Wired reports that Sony is confirmed to be, "working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation."

One of the big emulators for PS2 has a feature that allows the legitimate disc to be read and used. If they can use that and actually allow the PS4 to read PS2 disc then this is easily the best news all year for me.

Also i think they said they are going to make an official announcement at the beginning of december to reveal whats going on.

I've got a pipe dream hope that they might one day port it to the Vita, in line with how the PSP could play PS1 games. Make the Vita into a portable PS2 and it'd be flying off the shelves. Of course, with how Sony have all but abandoned it, I'd be surprised if it's ever even hinted at as a suggestion by Sony.

PS2 discs are simply CD roms IIRC, so if the PS4 can read those, it should technically be able to support emulation from disk like PCSX2. Whether they'll do this is another matter, but it would definitely be great if they made it work like that.

What about PS3? Is it already backwards compatible with that? I guess not, I'd consider buying a PS3 to play those games, as well as PS2 ones. If PS4 can handle it all, that'd be the console I only want from Sony.

There might be more in for coming about this at PSX

if it can use disc, it might work by download the game from the PSN, when you put the ps2 game disc in the ps4, and using the disc to run/verify the game
so olny a few game might work and very very very slow get games added
or
you must BUY ps2 classic off the PSN for all game

as right now the way ps2 game work is kinda locked out and only(the code is in the FW) as it runs the SW ps2 games in the ps4 SW battlefield bundle

the ps3 BC will not happen as the ps3 is very complex to emulate (and there is PS Now for ps3 game)

Why would Sony go through the pain of implementing PS2 compatibility?
Ofc they wanna generate more revenue :P They'll probably do what Nintendo is doing with VC

It's been known for quite some time that this feature would be implemented eventually, I did read some interviews mentioning it - glad that they're rolling it out. Shame that the CELL is so complex - PS3 BC would be pretty sweet.

PS3 Architecture is a bitch though, PS3 was so complicated to work, that Developers had to study the console for years in order to perfect Developing of games on it, it was and is still kinda hard to properly work on that console, and since the PS4 Processor is vastly different from the PS3, as it is more close to an actual PC gaming, chances are that, PS3 Emulation is a little far away, but hey, anyone can dream.

The PS2 emulation looks nice, though, i rather play the games on the original console, as the AVGN said, the best way to experience games, is with the original console, and sometimes, emulators for it (For example, SNES emulator on Wii is so much fun to use, and really, really good quite honestly)

I'll take an LCD display over CRT any day, and filters are a thing.

It is fine that you pick LCD tv's over CRT, like, many people does, but there is a charm on the CRT TV's that an LCD can't do, for example, when you connect a console like the PS1 on a LCD, naturally, it's gonna look like shit, since the image is so sharp that it makes the game blurry, and god awful, when you play it on a CRT, now the game looks fine, and also, i don't know you, but filters are kinda unnecessary, they don't change too much outside of the graphical look of the game, and again, it wasn't the intended way of developers to play a game seen like that.

Call me Old School, but i rather pick my game, put it on my PS2, press on, and play right away, instead of downloading an emulator, configure the Memory Cards, configure the controllers, the bios, the graphics, is just so annoying, and connecting a PC to a TV is also a pain in the ass, since you would have to be sure the cable is well connected, it doesn't "disconnect" suddenly because of "x" or "y", and then having to again use the emulator to load the shit you need, like, it's so much work for something as insignificant like filters, graphics or the fricking TV.

When i want to play my goddamn game right away, i play my goddamn game without doing that shit.

they are both CD and DVDs, the early games were generally CDs. Most ps2 games were DVD. CD based ps2 games were blue, where as ps1 games where black, DVD ps2 games were the typical DVD silver like color

but yeah the ps2 should be able to handle the emulation of these system, assuming the drive can even read these formats. If it cannot than there always digital versions

If games were played how devs intended, then Street Fighter wouldn't be competitive among other things.

I have a very nice gaming laptop that can play many things, and without all the cable mess that comes with having multiple consoles. Also, older consoles don't have customizable controls.

Well, it's opinions man, to each to their own.

Also, while having a gaming laptop is pretty sweet, you're just pretty much doing illegal things /:, as playing PS2 games on a computer is not exactly, a moral thing to do, also, yes, some old consoles have customizable controls, the PS2 (with some homebrew and MCBoot here and there) you could change the locations of the buttons in order to play a game differently, with a certain program IIRC, i don't remember the name though.

You just have to respect, not everyone has a gaming Laptop with a disk drive full of PS2 games available at your order, some people just want to play games on the original console because it's more accessible, much easier, and less pain in the ass to do, no matter how good your PC is, it cannot be compared to the feelings you have while playing a PS2, you have respect for the console, for the games you bought with your blood and tears, a thing that nowadays, has been lost with Steam + Digital Downloads everywhere.

Accessible? By definition, emulation is more accessible at the moment. Pirating is much easier than going on ebay or outside(to a store), especially since ps2 games are not that big.

Sure i'll agree that it's a matter of opinion how you want to play, but I'm not bound by illegal or moral barriers.

If they let people use discs they already own, then there's no profit in it for them. I'll be happy to eat my words, but I'm like 99.999% sure they won't ever let you use PS2 discs, just games you buy/rebuy from them. If it was PS3 games, then maybe, since they still make and sell those, but something they last got paid for years ago? Yeah right. And maybe the millionaire fairy will leave fat stacks under everyone's pillow too.

I think we can agree that, some people have it better buying things, more for the collectional part and the nostalgic part, while pirating is easier, is not more or less important than buying the real games, but in the end, is the decision of the consumer.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.
