So I know the last digit means what browser it has. People have said it needs to be at least a '7' for rxTools to work. Is there the same limitation for Gateway?

I just got a new old 3DS that I want to set up and post to my sister so we can play Triforce Heroes together. It has firmware 2.1.0-4E. The only cartridge I own is Majora's Mask which I think updates to like 8.1 or thereabouts. If I update it with Majora's Mask will I be able to use the Gateway on it and then be able to install 9.0-9.2 and eventually set it up with auto-booting rxTools? I also remember people saying you can't use sysupdater with Gateway mode. I also have a copy of Cubic Ninja if that helps.

A bullet point list saying what restrictions there are on every browser version would be great (unless everything needs '7' or higher).

The last digit (or two) generally lets you know what version of the browser and other network components your 3DS has. However, this is only relevant below 9.9, because there are now gamecards (physical retail games) coming with 9.9 updates and dummy browsers that intentionally brick your 3ds' browser with a fake one that pops up a nagging update message, and they do NOT update the last digit/two digits of your version number.

Yeah, I know all this, but thanks :-) I am wondering if I have to go buy another game to get to 4.x or can I get everything working using Majora's mask, gateway and cubic ninja.

Whoops, I didn't read your original post very well, I'm sorry about that. I honestly don't know the answers to the specific browsers part. It probably can't hurt to leave that message there just in case someone comes asking, though.

Gateway launcher supports browser exploit even if browser doesn't match the firm version. (2.0~7.x browser on 4.1~9.2 firm)
But for the safety, the best choice is to buy cartridge that comes with 4.x firmware.

Go for the safe side, buy or rent a cheap 4.x cardtridge and use the mset exploit.

Best thing you can do to avoid bad surprises.

OK yeah I guess that's safest. Wanted to find out before I go home so can stop at the shops if I needed to buy something!

Mum is sending her a package tomorrow so need to get it set up quickly so I can include it (some pairs of shoes ... you can't buy size ten in Hong Kong, everyone has tiny tiny feet) :-)

I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.

    I dread the price point.

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
