Guide Backup Nand (contains Wiiu System / vWii System)

Thx Adr990

Read this:
http://wiiubrew.org/wiki/TSOP_NAND
Someone via IRC did this recently, and documented it to that page.

The Wii U NAND and vWii NAND are the same chip. Just two different banks in the chip.
You can use something like an Teensy++ 2.0 with NANDway, as described on the TSOP_NAND page.

The eMMC chip, which we indeed should be able to dumped via an SD Card reader, is solely used for Wii U Storage. So downgrading with that alone wouldn't even be possible, let alone do any good without the actual NAND dump.

Guide Below top Dump 8gb Emmc or 32gb Emmc

If this works as prescribed, this mega easy. Do note, from the look of this you don't need an adapter if your card reader supports 1-bit mode. Should be able to solder directly to card reader (where applicable). Would need to test to be sure though.

Yea, please test restoration. I'd also do multiple dumps to be sure they are all the same before trying that. If it all works fine, I'll probably make some sort of modification myself.

Will test it when I'm back from work (in ~9hours).
Will do two NAND Backups then (5.4.0 and 5.5.0).
Should be able to switch between the Firmwares then :D

If that works, I'll be really really happy. It isn't that simple on some things because of flags or information stored in other chips, efuses, etc. This will be Pandora's Box on Wii U for me if all works well though. I didn't see that guy (or gal) mention that they updated and tried a downgrade, just restoration alone, so I'm not going to hold my breath too much, but I'm hoping it works out fine.

I won't have to buy the programmer I was looking at if this works, since I can do the other systems I have by other means.

Thanks though for taking the time to post about this, and testing it all out. I'm sure I would have missed it, lest it became popular advice.

Just curious, anyone happen to know how large these pins are compared to the old 3DS (non-XL) are?
I'm not sure, but I can tell you the person used a 1mm tip. From a guess by the pic, 0.3 - 0.4mm points, but not sure.

Someone who could translate this tutorial?
its almost the same thing as the 3ds one

i will translate a fast version of the tutorial:

the wii has 2 nands, 1 for the WII U and another for the vWII
by following this tutorial the vWII nand will not be copied, but you can make a copy of the vWII using another guide (which uses software like the wii)

materials needed, just click on the links on the "Occorrente" box
since only a person that already have some experience with soldering should attempt to follow this tutorial i am not giving an explanation about the materials, you can look at the pictures and get an equivalent)

the tutorial is just like the 3ds one, you solder the pins to a micro sd adapter, according the picture
the pins on the nand are large enough, because nintendo uses them to test the nand after it's soldered on the board
in the picture "ignorare" means "ignore" you can ignore the dat1 dat2 and dat3
after soldering, connect the micro sd to the pc, turn on the console, the standard non formatted disc message will appear, ignore it. and as you know, if windows formats it, the wii u nand is gone...
use win32 disk imager to make the copy

simple and straightfoward, if this info is not enough then i don't think you should attempt to do it by yourself...

I translated the tutorial, I was going to put it in the tutorials section but for some reason it won't post. It's not an exact word for word translation but rather interpreted so the sentence structure is more natural for English readers.

Here it is on Google Docs anyway.

It seems to be translated correctly, but please add a link to the original post...

I assumed anyone who read it would have gone via this link and realised I only translated the tutorial and not created it, as this is the only place the link is available.

I've added in a little disclaimer nonetheless, I don't want to steal credit from anyone!

This means that If I backup my wii u nand with 5.3.2 firmware, then update it on 5.5.0, then I'll be able to restore it back to 5.3.2?

Is it tested? I have pretty good soldering skills. If anyone confirmed that it is working, I'll do it.

Could you send me some pictures of the wii u's screen while it's backupping?
RyujiAndy said:
I'm sorry but the wiiu wasn't connected to the tv and the pad couldn't connect
xX Dani Xx said:
Ok, 2 last and I swear last questions. To solder did you use a very thin or normal solder tip? Have you ever tried to restore the firmware?
RyujiAndy said:
I used 2mm diameter tip yes it works reading and writing, by the way i used a pc with linux os
xX Dani Xx said:
Ok,thank you very much for the answers!
RyujiAndy said:
Sorry the tip was 1mm and not 2
xX Dani Xx said:
The file weighs 8 gb? XD
RyujiAndy said:
It depends on the wiiu.
There are two models one with 8 gb nand and one with 16
(actually 32...)

EDIT: if I quoted someone on GBAtemp, it's a mistake, sorry...
