TL; DR yes it is preferred that evey game you want online you should use a header from the game Cart or use a Cia file it may not be perfect (still bannable) but it is a lot harder for them to find than a gateway/sky with none

Okay this is mostly for verification purposes so I don't end up with a brick. I'm getting a Gateway Cart in the mail and I wanna make sure I know what I'm doing. I can follow a step by step tut, so installing the Gateway exploit and whatever I'm okay with.

1.) Do I need to/Should I downgrade my Sysnand to 4.5? Why?

-As far as I've read this is a yes because it makes gateway work better and allows for the installation of Pasta-CFW

2.) Should I install Pasta CFW?

-As far as I've read it's kinda muddy, it seems like it does exactly what gateway does but I am intrigued with installing .cia files to my homescreen and playing without using gateway.

3.) I've read the guide on .CIA files but I'm a bit confused. From what I understand a .CIA is an installation file for a game/whatever. If you install a "dirty" one through Gw you can only boot it with GW(or similar) but if you install a "legit" .cia you can boot it from Sysnand(?) Do you still need to execute Gateway to run the installed game if it's legit? What if I have Pasta, does that eliminate the need for Gateway at all?

4.) Can you make personal .Cia files from your backups using FunkyCia? Are they "legit" ?

5.) last one I promise! If I use a cia installed game do I still have to be careful about my saves like with GW or are they safe?

Thanks for your patience and sorry for reiterating things i'm sure have been asked to the nth degree. I just like to make sure everything is absolutely clear before I go totally homebrew crazy on my device.

NOT Preferred asfik Nintendo will see eg your SSB as a Bravely Defult and will be quicker to ban you so ether buy the game or use a Cia of the game

With rxTools i can create emuNand without Gateway card.
But this is sadly not possible with a N3DS
Is there any other way without Gateway to create it?
If I already have one I could use Reinand to start it so taht wouldn't be a Problem.
I could just install my copy of Cubic ninja via cia somehow ? and Then start emunand using Reinand?
Would this somehow work ?

With my Current Device im on 9.9 and I afraid this wont work with this device.
But if I would buy a sealed N3DS XL OoT Edition it would be 9.2 i believe

Well use freehax by seema for the current device and if u can find a unique unupdated console use that for your gateway style hax

2. Boot Reinand via Cubic Ninja and Ninjhax
3. Now I should be in emuNAND
4. Run FBI to install unsigned cias(for example ssb)

Then I could play SSB in emuNAND in a kind of safe way...?

So out of idiocy, I bought Gateway 3DS after I 'unintentionally' updated my 3DS to 9.8 because I was sick of the update notices just before I decided to invest on flashcart. I misunderstood that 'emuNAND' support means that it's not the system firmware support.
Because I'd have spent much anyway on 3DS carts, I'm not desperate to return it and thinking of waiting until 9.8 is supported. I don't even know if the retailer (peachds) support returns and it's been more than a month.

The question is, if we don't talk about money issues, should I just spend on sky3ds as well or just wait for Gateway 3DS support? Is saving the money worth the wait?

Sky3DS is kind of in a state of crisis right now. Nintendo has added new anti-piracy checks in their newer game releases and this stops the games from functioning on Sky3DS. As for waiting for Gateway, you'll probably be waiting for a while. It's unlikely a new kernel exploit will be found in the near future.

Hey everyone, sorry for the long post.

First off just wanted to say thanks for all of the amazing guides/help that is on this forum, it was so helpful in choosing my 3DS+flashcart, and how to install – really appreciated!

I have a New Nintendo 3ds XL running firmware 9.0.0-20E. I bought a Gateway and followed their installation manual using Gateway Ultra v3.3.

I may have acquired a few downloads, but am stuck as what to do with them now. Most of them are 30 identical files of "ctr-ek2a" and then there are a few .r30, r.31, etc. files, and a .sfv file.

I'm not really sure what to do next - how do I get the .3ds or .3dz files that I need to put onto my gateway? I haven't been able to find a "what next" tutorial for how you actually get games ready and onto the gateway cartridge. Am I missing something really obvious?

Man I have the first edition of 3DS too -_- Bought 3DS from day one and can't be bothered to 'upgrade it' since.. (replace with newer version)
Time to hunt down <9.2.. geh.. any advice?
