I downloaded the new Ace Attorney game and new yoshi's island, decrypted it with rxtools, converted to cia and installed with fbi. However, when I run the game I get an error saying "An error has occurred." and I have to reboot the 3DS. Is there anything I can do to get this working?

Well, to answer my own question:
It seems the rxtools decrypter doesn't work for me. I had to generate a ncchinfo.bin and xorpads and convert to cia that way.

Yes, it is possible to change emuNAND's region. Unfortunately, it will not allow you to access the eShop at all once you do the region change, it's a bug that's still being worked on. If you do decide to do a region change, you should still be able to play your US carts. Since I think your main use for the region change is to go on the JP eShop and that doesn't work on region changed 3DSes, I would advise against doing this.

Well, the 3DS I'm using with CFW is mostly for japanese games anyways so I'll find another means for DLC.

Is the process for region changing difficult? I know at least I use 3DNUS for something but I don't know if I need any other file. I don't want any risk of a brick.

Of course there is a risk of bricking it! If messing with your system nand to change to a different region doesn't ring BRICK RISK all over the concept itself you are being... naive?

So I understand that new 3ds are supported by gateway. If i go out and buy a new 3ds will they all have firmware 9.2 or lower? Basically i want to upgrade my 3ds to a new 3ds but still use gateway will there be any problem with this?

Region changing emuNAND is relatively safe, sysNAND is another story. You will need a 3DS from the region you wish to swap to, as it must donate its secureInfo_A to the 3DS having its region changed if you wish to continue to use online features. You can also download the JP DLCs as .cia files and avoid the whole region changing process.

Looks like I was incorrect about accessing the eShop on region changed emuNAND; seems like it is possible (if you have another 3DS from the correct region that has never been connected to the internet). Maybe it's only impossible on region changed sysNAND?

N3DSes come in a lot of different firmwares, a list of known serial numbers for firmware versions can be found here: http://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/

The chance of finding one in a store with an exploitable version seems to have lowered significantly since the system was released, if you want to hunt for one, you might get lucky and find one. Alternatively, you could pay a large price for one on eBay if you want one guaranteed. Launching GW on the N3DS requires a copy of Cubic Ninja, Ocarina of Time (and a save dongle or an already GW exploitable 3DS) or a Sky3DS the first time. After that, you can install the MSET exploit and the game will no longer be required to launch GW.

I dont want to accidently update over 9.2. is there a list that tells me if a game updates over 9.2?

1. Can I play all games .cias? (I know you cannot play .3ds without Gateway)
2. Will I be able to use cheat codes?
3. Can I install multiple .cias on a microSD?
4. Will I have to use the Ninjahax every time I want to play?

Is it worth it to buy the gateway or try CFW?

If you want to use CFW outside of your home/wifi access you have to downgrade to 4.x, this is so you can use the DS Profile Exploit which doesn't require internet conection.

The first thing you HAVE to do, is backup your system nand using gateway's launcher.dat, so if antlything goes wrong your 3DS won't be permanently bricked, downgrading the 3DS is pretty safe but you can never be too causios, BigBlueMenu is an app that allows you to install cia games into your SD memory card, you *don't have* to install it, you can just use FBI to install your games but I rather use BBM, it has a nice and easy UI and allows you to delete games that you no longer want to play.

If I was you:
1)Use gateway's launcher.dat to backup nand and copy it to your PC.
2)Use gateway's launcher.dat to format emunand.
3)Copy rxTools files and update emunand to 9.9
4)Use fbi injection and install BigBlueMenu.cia
5)Get some cias and install them.

Hi there, I'm brand new to hacking and I need some help! My firmware is a 6.3.0-12U, I would like to get it to a 9.x {but below 9.5.0-23x} so I can hack Animal Crossing New Leaf. I've heard that Super Smash Bros. has a 9.x update on it {9.2 I think?} but I'm not exactly sure how this works and how I can make sure that I'm getting a copy of SSB with a 9.2 update instead of an 8.x update. Any help would be greatly appreciated! <3

http://3ds.essh.co/ has a list of most games and what firmware version they come with. I'd recommend just updating to 4.X and use rxTools from there.

Since you're on 9.7, your only option is a Sky3DS.

In the case of the N3DS, Gateway is still the best option as most of the CFWs do not have support for the N3DS yet.
When using GW:
1. Yes.
2. I'm not sure; there is a thing called ARCode, but I'm not sure if it works in GW mode.
3. Yes.
4. No, you can install the MSET exploit the first time you launch GW and use the DS Profile exploit from then on.

Thanks for the detailed information. I prefer DS Profile Exploit to use my 3DS without internet access.

What I´ve done so far:
1) Used gateway's launcher.dat to backup nand.
2) Used gateway's launcher.dat to format emunand.
3) Used gateway's launcher.dat & gateway.dg to downgrade to 4.5.0-8e
4) Copied rxtools.dat and firmware.bin to sdcard (I am not sure if i have to use the official 2.6 binaries or the "patched" ones?)
5) Launch rxTools via browser and http://launch.rxtools.net/

I presume next steps would be:
6) Install and use DS Profile exploit to launch rxTools (where do I 'find' that DS Profile exploit)
7) Update emunand to 9.9 (is this an option of rxTools?)
8) Use fbi injection and install BigBlueMenu.cia (do I have to use that v3077 fbi_inject.app file or which version is correct?)
9) Done

When it´s done and I power on my 3DS, then it starts in sysnand mode. To launch emunand I have to launch the DS Profile exploit?
Then I can run rxTools to for example dump one of my cartridges?

Depends, there are two known versions of Smash, one with the 8.1 update and another with the 9.2 update. You'd be better off using a game that is confirmed to only have a 9.0-9.2 update on it. Normally http://3ds.essh.co/ is the best place to check for a list of games and their firmwares, but it looks like they're having some technical issues right now.

You can also use 3DNUS to download the 9.2 update, and update using sysUpdater.

Just insert the game cart to your 3DS. When you launch the game, "Update to <version number here>?" notice will appear.
