Currently the only reliable way is looking at a dump of a game, the first bytes of the disc:
"WUP-P-AXFE-00-520USA-0" as you can see this would have 5.2.0.
This is smash bros. USA.
Is that the version number of the update on the disc, or the minimum version number required by the game? I don't know if this is the case on Wii U, but I know on some other systems, sometimes a game requires a certain minimum version, but a later version update is included on the game media.

Depends on when it was bought, but yes

It will only be a higher version when the game is updated and they remaster the image that is being pressed.

I'm asking because I bought a WiiU with Mario 3d World Bundle and I saw that the first post says this game has Firmware 3.1.0 but I think my disc had a > version than 3.1.0.

Edit: Crediar is a pleasure to meet you sir. I'm a great fan of your work.

Could someone please update the OP (or tell on this thread) which updates are on Splatoon and Yoshi (PAL)?
Thanks a lot!

EDIT: they both seem to be 5.3.2

Just bought a Wii U for my family and it came with 5.3.2 on it. I've run the softwood guides and WiiFlow and such are working, and my DNA is set to block Nintendo updates via the OpenDNS method. I notice when my kids have in Lego Batman 3 it's asking us about installing an update and saying it can't contact the server? If I disconnect intent can I try to see if the disc has an update OR should I just keep ignoring that message. Thanks.

Wow, just saw this post was my first in 7 years. I want to thank everyone for their knowledge and help.

Yea, that's what it's supposed to do if you have it blocked right. You're good to go.

Does anybody know if the Japanese version of Yoshi's Wolly World also only requires 5.3.2?

I ask this because the Japanese version was released much later than the other versions - it was only released here around a week ago so there's a higher chance that it has a newer firmware.

Sadly for anything that doesn't have a scene release we can only try or guess.
There currently aren't any Japanese scene releases.

I'd guess it doesn't have 5.4.0, you can always not do the update too.

I just purchased Mario Kart 8, the Mario Kart 8 disc updated the Wii U to 5.3.2 and the game had the Mario Kart 4.0 update on disc.

Perfect for someone with a new Wii U who wants to keep the Wii exploitable and have an updated Mario Kart.

Any chance you could tell us the code printed on the underneath of the disk around the inner circle?

If you are unsure where to look here are some pictures of the disk codes used for GameCube Metroid Prime:-

Just curious what revision this updated disk is.

Just curious what revision this updated disk is.

The following is wrote around the disc on the back in various sections:

  • WUP-P-AMKP-03 JPN S0
  • 515D1503
  • IFPLLL39

On the front of the disc in the bottom middle it shows:
  • WUP-P-AMKP-EUR MODEL NO. WUP-006(EUR) ©2014 Nintendo Co., Ltd.
