i finally started playing Splatoon and am having fun but also very frustrated. Even with motion controls I suck and with them off I can't do crap. My understanding is a proper shooter should just use the sticks.

What should I do? Just suck it up and force myself to get good with the stick or gain some experience with aiming using motion and then try and switch over?

You've been misinformed. A proper shooter should not be using the sticks. A proper shooter should use keyboard+mouse.

Gyro controls and IR controls are second to keyboard+mouse.

Don't gimp yourself. Keep using the gyro controls. Faster and much more accurate.

Practice and you'll improve. Don't switch to dual sticks.

Shooters are fine with dual sticks, especially if you can up the sensitivity and somehow still aim. I can't count the number of times I've somehow been outgunned in CoD by some sniper managing to turn around in a fifth of a second and shooting my face with pinpoint accuracy while barely half scoped in. It's possible to be incredibly fast and accurate. It just takes more practice than the point and click methods of keyboard and mouse.

Dual analogue sticks are the proper way of playing shooters on consoles but if you've never really been into it, I guess you can try giving the motion controls a chance until your hands start tiring out from moving in every god damn direction.

Gyro control can work incredibly well. When playing Wind Waker HD I found it a LOT more accurate to aim the bow with gyro controls. The implementation in Splatoon is... weird though (I only played global testfire). I don't understand why they don't allow you to use both the gyro and the right stick on both axes. It always confused my brain that I had to use the stick for one axis and the gyro for the other... it doesn't feel natural. For precise movements I'd like to be able to tilt the gamepad, for faster and not-so-accurate ones the stick.

I think the gyro controls are worth adapting to (even though there are many naysayers), but I really hope they patch in the option to use the controller like in WWHD at some point. That'd make me buy it.

I think you should try both, and master the one you feel more comfortable with, any option is good when you take the hang of it.

The sticks at maximum sensitivity are extremely fast and I still can´t use them with that configuration (I use sticks with about 50% sensitivity), but if you practice enough to be able to aim like that, I think you can be as fast as using the gyro.

It does use the gyro for both axes, but the right stick is only for turning left/right which makes sense to me, it's for movement whereas the gyro is for aiming. And it works pretty well, trying to play well with just the sticks is simply impossible because you just can't move quickly or accurately enough.
Takes a little getting used to but is so much better in the end.

In my opinion, having gyro controls and the right stick make a fantastic combo for Splatoon. You have the quick up and down movements of the Gamepad and the right stick to quickly turn around corners. Therefore, I use gyro for the y-axis, and the right stick for the x-axis.

I have friends who use the dual sticks for Splatoon and found success, but it really is a matter of preference. For instance, those who play a great deal of CoD or Halo on the Xbox may favour dual sticks, whereas those who are most accustomed to the accuracy of a keyboard and mouse would be more receptive to motion controls.

I'd argue a joystick and mouse is better for shooters than a keyboard and mouse, but either way a FPS is generally better with a mouse at least.

As for gyro controls, they sound good in theory, but they're uncomfortable for me to use. I'll take comfort over competitiveness any day. That said, I don't get into online multiplayer so competitiveness a very low priority for me.

Precisely.

Playing an online game that lacks voice chat and therefore any ability to have strategy plus restricted to play two fucking maps each 4hrs that Nintendo chooses sure makes a lot of sense to play competitively, 'cause ya know there's a reward.. get a headache of playing the same Splatoon shit.

I still don't understand why they didn't implement voice chat from the get go. That's a killer.
The creator got called something like "You're fucked in the head, stop ruining our game" and so he decided to took out on the rest by ditching voice chat regardless that's entirely dependable on whom you meet online. At the very least the dipshit could've let voice chat be optional but no.

motion controls depends on the person will. I got used to Splatoon motion controls instead of turn them off immediately like all the people that say motion controls sucks.
meanwhile my friend tried motion controls for like 5 minutes before turn them off and 5 minutes aren't enough to get fully used.

you can try forcing yourself to play with motion controls taking your time and adjusting the sensibility if you see fit and I'll guarantee you'll get used to it. if not you can just turn them off and play like always.

and now that remind me of myself in the past. I used to play shooters on pc, then I switched to console and got used to sticks with inverted Y axis because that was the standard configuration, then games changed default controls to normal Y axis and after some hours I got used to it.
I'm the living example that with enough practice you can get used to any control.

I play with motion controls, and it works very well for me. I also like to have a fast right stick with it, as well.
I think you'll just need to get used to the motion controls. It'll take some time, but it is way more accurate.

I had the same dillema but once you get used to hitting Y frequently to calibrate it will work a lot better.

1up to Keyboard + Mouse for shooters. I hate sticks, I always turn on auto aim when I have to use them.

Does splatoon offer wiimote and nunchuck gameplay, I thought nintendo decided against motion controls for this game.

You can´t use Wiimote + Nunchuk. The only motion controls are with the Gamepad, using its gyro to aim, or with a gimmicky WUPC + Wiimote combination.

I don't think you can use a WUPC + Wiimote if you are playing by yourself. You can, however, use this combination when you have a friend that you can play Local Battle Dojo (1 vs. 1) matches with.
