NTR is debatable because it never touches ARM9 FIRM, but it messes with ARM11 FIRM.

It's just emuNAND and nothing more. It doesn't allow anything that normal firmware doesn't, hence not CFW.
emuNAND counts as a CFW if you ask me. Plus he has to do some stuff to modify MSET at runtime to show "-E" or whatever for emuNAND, Plus by that logic Pasta isn't a CFW either because it only changes 8 bytes and "only" disables sig checks.

Any emunand available that allows me to install pokemon y legit on 4.5 and update to 9.2 via 3dnus? I'm avoiding dualnand cause it doesn't allow much free space on a 4GB SD.

[EDIT] Nevermind, I decided to use my 16GB for the dualnand, I can still use my palantine and now I can play legit games to.

So what this thread pretty well summarizes is that "custom firmware" has a largely shaky and uncertain definition, so you'd have to better define what you mean to get a decent answer. I'd definitely count NTR for the modifications it allows, and rxTools, yellows8's 4.x CFW and its modifications by nop90, KARL-in-progress, plus however many more that only exist in private.

Here's a list:
  • Yellows8's CFW (Leaked by govanify)
  • Palantine's CFW (Modified from yellows8's)
  • PBT-CFW (Modified from palantine's)
  • Dual-emuNAND CFW (Modified from palantine's)
  • TRICK CFW (PBT + Dual-emuNAND + Palantine)
  • rxMode
  • NTR-CFW 1.0 (old 3ds)
  • NTR-CFW 2.0 (new 3ds)
  • Gateway
  • MT-card (Was used for cartless emuNAND on 4.5 before rxMode came to life)
  • Some more clones, not as widely used.
  • Pasta
  • Pasta MSET version
  • Unreleased: KARL
  • Unreleased: Govanify's CFW (He teased it on his site, so I guess it gets a place here)
  • Unreleased: Some other private CFWs.
Tell me if I'm missing something.

4.x CFWs (These patch signature checks = illegal games, and provide DevMenu installation, and only load with MSET on 4.x. These are pretty hard to set up and a bit unstable when booting.)
  • Yellows8's CFW (Leaked by govanify) (Boots emuNAND)
  • Palantine's CFW (Modified from yellows8's) (Boots emuNAND, more stable than Yellows8's)
  • PBT-CFW (Modified from palantine's) (Boots sysNAND)
  • Dual-emuNAND CFW (Modified from palantine's) (Boots second emuNAND)
  • TRICK CFW (PBT + Dual-emuNAND + Palantine)
Piracy:
  • Gateway (Patches signature checks = free games and emuNAND support via MSET + spider on firmware 4.0-9.2. Requires DRM card. Classic mode only does the emuNAND stuff and supports emuNAND without DRM card until something like 7.x.)
  • MT-card (Was used for cartless emuNAND on 4.5 before rxMode came to life) (Same stuff as gateway, only boots via MSET on 4.x, supports emuNAND until 9.5, Classic mode works without DRM card)
  • Some more clones, not as widely used.
  • Pasta (Only patches signature checks on firmware 4.0-9.2 via CN, boots to sysNAND)
  • Pasta MSET version (old 3ds) (Only patches signature checks on firmware 4.x via MSET, boots to sysNAND)
"Muh piracy" (a.k.a. actively refuses to patch signature checks):
  • rxMode (old 3ds) (emuNAND via MSET + spider + CN on firmware 4.0-9.2)
  • NTR-CFW 1.0 (old 3ds) (Region free, cheats and plugins for MSET on 4.x. Boots sysNAND and emuNAND)
  • NTR-CFW 2.0 (new 3ds) (Region free, cheats and plugins for CN on 9.x. Boots sysNAND)
Unreleased:
  • Unreleased: KARL
  • Unreleased: Govanify's CFW (He teased it on his site, so I guess it gets a place here)
  • Unreleased: Some other private CFWs.
instead a plain list of cfw, i'd like to see a list of cfw with descriptions, and what they can do.

I tried, but there are some details missing.
You should check out their respective threads for the full descriptions.

emuNAND is emuNAND. CFW is CFW. Things can be both, but not neccessarily.
They are two separate, distinct things that really have nothing to do with eachother.

What is a Custom Firmware by your definition?
Anything that even if it is just a hack of the original firmware allows some different functionality, like e.g. allowing to run unsigned code or redirecting read/writes from NAND to SD?
PS: If you didn't notice you can't redirect with the normal firmware, so rxTool ALLOWS you to do something the original firmware CAN'T.
Something completely custom not based on the original firmware?
Something that let's you play pirated games?

As for me, I think the first one is the definition of CFW, so emuNAND enabled FW is a CFW.

Honestly I think you're twisting terminology to fit your definition. "emuNAND enabled FW" just doesn't make any sense to me, emuNAND IS the FW.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
