[DEBUNKED] Nintendo NX will use android OS?

Android_robot.svg.png

According to an article on Japanese website Nikkei, Nintendo's next console codenamed 'NX' will use an android operating system. A reason cited for this decision is the fact that the WiiU isn't compatible with other consoles making it harder for third party developers to put their titles onto the system. Then there is also the announcement from earlier this year that Nintendo will start developing smartphone games will somehow link into the new system.

I'm suspicious, as Nintendo's #1 is usually securing its software. Poorly, but they usually try really hard. Going with android seems to run counter to this.

Nintendo basically regressed and turned to gimmicks to maintain their foothold, ignoring common trends and features in the home console market, preferring their little bubble that only further isolated them from where the majority of gamers were shifting.

Their philosophy is "what's fun?". Microsoft/sony is more "what makes sense". You call them gimmicks because they're unusual and tricky to implement. Which seems like you're saying that in order to qualify as "innovative", it has to be pretty much unanimously agreed to have been successful.

I do complain about the hardware because the software that comes out for a system is intrinsically connected to what the system can do, which in this case is "not much". Long story short, if your system can't run latest engines, no one will invent new ones *unless* the system totally dominates the market and devs have no choice but to comply. If the N3DS and the PSVita could have a baby, it would be happy days for me. I kept them together on a desk for a few months now, so far nothing happened, but I'm hopeful and I'll keep you posted.

Sure, we need more proprietary shit, that worked well for the Vita.

As if the 3DS game cards or the Wii U's game disc aren't proprietary? Face facts, in order to have some level of game security, there needs to be some form of proprietary tech. I'm all for piracy but it shouldn't be too easy.

No, I consider it a gimmick if it's wholly unnecessary and doesn't particularly add to the gaming experience. The Wii remote set up, for example, seemed innovative at first, that was until you got your fill of Wii Sports. After that, it became refreshing when a game just used a more standard control scheme, although that led to the creation of too many peripherals and extra controllers to count.

When it comes to the 3DS, the 3D in absolutely no way adds to the gaming experience. It doesn't improve how the game looks, and if anything, it holds the 3DS back since they opted for a special low res screen to support this 3D option rather than focusing that development time and money into improving the console's specs. The 3D is as gimmicky as gimmicks go.

Hell, with the Wii U, the gaming tablet had a chance to be innovative, but just became that thing that drove up the price of the console for a very small handful of games that utilize it well. In the long run, it's unnecessary, more often than not fails to improve the gaming experience, and feels gimmicky like Nintendo felt like a more classically designed console wouldn't sell. Or rather, they seem to think having some quirk that makes their hardware stand out will make the difference when clearly, that is not the case.

And their philosophy may be "what's fun", but I think fun and them are having issues keeping in contact these days as Nintendo struggles to turn out quality content that is, you know, fun, in a timely manner this generation, both on the 3DS and the Wii U.

Proprietary *storage* is nonsense, game media can be whatever Nintendo wants.

You say that but we're talking Android here. I know of only ONE Android DVD drive. Sure, Nintendo could use their proprietary BD-Roms and just make their drive act as a USB disk but still, Android works best with solid state media.

That isn't Android.
Android absolutely is bloated, it's a massive shell of nonsense running on top of a perfectly good Linux kernel. It's good for mobile tech like phones and tablets and that's where it belongs. There's no reason to run Android on a standardized system, it's wasteful.

You're making it sound like writing a simple driver is a difficult task for an army of engineers, which it isn't. Like I said, they can store their games on whatever they want as long as the removable storage for users is standardized.

I too would really like to fork over another $80 just so I can fit the next super mario orgy on my fake phone.

Sony and Microsoft both have made leaps and bounds towards making the home console experience what it is today. Microsoft became an example of how good an online service could be on a home console, while Sony has established that they know how to handle a digital marketplace geared towards console gamers, integrating their various platforms across a unified account system and offering options like cross buy content.
If you consider a gaming rig a console then Steam did those first.

i said from the second i saw the wii u the controller was gimmicky and not innovative i predicted it would be a massive failure

but i still disagree on 3d i love it, i loved revisiting OOT in 3d

sure they probably should have waited till head tracking was there before releasing it and they could have used a better screen with more than 4 parallax barriers
but overall i think it's a great innovation and addition, i don't see how you can say it adds nothing
it has been a big success for nintendo and so was the wii

my only complaint is that aside from the lack of any good games for 3ds lately is that they never really took advantage
of the 3d to it's full potential, they never create any content with dramatic pop out 3d effects it's almost never used i wish they would make more use of pop out instead of always pop in 3d all the time

i always love nintendos hardware up until the wii u anyways
their main problem is games when they do create a great game it is really great but those are so few and far between
they can make quality software but can never deliver any quantity and on any kind of time frame
of course maybe it is the dev hardware being just to hard to develop for who knows
but they need to solve the problem of slow releases and lack of quality games especially for their big franchises,
nintendo has resorted to shoveling out 2.5 d half ass titles instead of making full 3d titles , they just shovel these games out and never make any full 3d games anymore

Just because you love it doesn't mean it's not gimmicky
I like the Wii U gamepad but still find it very gimmicky. It wouldn't be gimmicky if I could take it and play on it everywhere. Like a Handheld and Home Console hybrid.

I would love to see them develop a new OS from scratch that blew Android and IOS out of the water.

Oh yes. I can already picture it:

Mario OS!

The OS where YouTube is banned and online gaming runs at a smooth 250 ping!

FREEDOM!

Let's face it; Nintendo is cheap. They sell outdated hardware for high prices. They sell gimmicks as innovation. They remake classics and market them as AAA games. But damn, do they do it will. Extremely well, honestly.

I feel it's safe to say that IF they use Android, or maybe even a natural Linux environment with an Android runtime (Something like ARC Welder.) for less clutter and more power, it will most likely be because of their new found enjoyment of the app market.
