Is there any way at all to purchase it and use it with my Gateway?

If I were to update another 3DS to the latest firmware to access the store, and then purchase it with my retail copy of FEA, is there any way to get my DLC over to my Gateway copy? Or is it just not possible right now?
I've got a New 3DS, an Old 3DS XL and a normal Old 3DS, in case it matters

You can install a CIA of the DLC and that way you have no need for the eShop :)

The way you suggested would not let you transfer it to the Gateway, you can only do that on a hackable console. If you specifically want to buy it, the only way to transfer it to Gateway would be to use rxTools to update/boot a 9.6 emuNAND, buy it there and use the ticket.db dumper in rxTools along with FunkyCIA2 to create a CIA file from it.
This probably only works if your emuNAND and sysNAND are linked.

I was able to obtain it from the "other" site and install it as cia. Haven't used it yet. If you are concerned about the "purchase" aspect perhaps a small donation to a charitable STEM program for youth could make things "right"?

I've never used a .cia file before, are there any guides on this?
Specifically for DLC .cia files, are they installed into the rom, or into the console? Just so I know if I have to install it again when I eventually move to the New 3DS

Also, does it matter what region .cia I have? If it does, does installing the wrong region .cia files have any negative effects? Can I transfer saves between regions?

You need to obtain title manager/big blue menu to instal cia files. The update/dlc needs to be the same region as your rom/cia for it to work. I believe you can transfer saves between regions using savedatafiler but I have not done so. Look over in the tutorials section I believe there is a guide there. Yes you will likely need to install it again when you switch systems because it is not signed code so even if you can do a system transfer it won't transfer. Not a big deal, just takes a few minutes.

Alright, thanks!
Before I mess anything up, how do I know what these programs already installed are in the Program tab of Big Blue Menu?
They are things like CTR Card, CTR-N-NXCP, etc
Most are Applications, one is a patch and one is "system", what are they and what happens if I open them?

Also, is it true that going into the e-store or data management will remove all .cia files I install, and all my saves and DLC? I can't seem to find any solid info on this

I've got emunand 9.2 if it matters, I don't touch my sysnand

Dont mess with them! Lol. System files and apps like YouTube and stuff.

3ds.essh.co has all the codes and stuff for the dumps so bookmark that site, it is real handy.

If sysnand and emunand are still linked entering datamanagemrnt on sysnand will wipe all your stuff. Best to unlink unless you have some power user reason not to. Eshop will delete dlc but not updates. Some would leave the dlc cia file in the root of the mSD for easy reinstall, but with no eshop access right now it is not really an issue.
