As someone that just recently bought a New 3DS and a gateway.. And Cubic Ninja..
when i bought my n3ds (+tax and everything about $230) from walmart it came with 9.0 =) so i could go either way Sky3DS or Gateway.. based on recommendations here i went with the gateway.. (~$60) And then i bought a copy of cubic ninja from amazon prime ($40)

So not counting screeen protectors and a case just to play any game i've spent ~$330
If i had it to do over again and was a little more patient i would have done it a bit different.. i would have bought the n3ds ($230) and a sky3ds (~$70) and them bought a gateway if i felt the need (~$60) while this would have cost me more total at ~$360 i would have the the best of both worlds.. the sky3ds is easier ot use.. just burn the games to the sd card and pop it in.. push a button to switch games.. and IF i wanted i could run the latest firm ware (as of 9.6) having the gateway is nice because i can install things to the emunand as cia file (basiclly install roms to the sd card that goes in the 3ds) and home brew (and to be honest the ONLY homebrew i've installed is the app to install CIA files)

If you want the cheapest way to get playing as of now.. i would say N3ds and a Sky3ds (about $300 to get running) where as the gateway method is gonna cost about $330 because having to buy cubic ninja..

Playing online with Gateway 3DS is much easier. Use the .CIA versions and you don't have to worry about headers or bans at all.

First you need to know your firmare.

On your 3DS go to SETTINGS.

When the wrench appears on the top screen, look in the bottom right corner. Tell us what you see.

Should be something like:

9.2.0-22U

If it is 9.3 or 9.4 or 9.5 or 9.6 you can ONLY use a Sky3DS.

Are you using an Old (no c-stick) 3DSXL or New (c-stick) 3DSXL?
Not to brag but my 3DS is 9.2.0 and my recently just got it now new 3ds is 9.0.0 so I can get Gateway or Sky3ds just not the cubic ninja or OOT which is funny because I had OOT when it first came out but I sold it... the only thing I don't like is that sky3ds is like 80 something dollars and gateway is 60 something dollars :/

Most people here already had purchased cubic ninja back in november because of Ninjhax. I spent a whopping $5 on mine

Not to mention gateway has homebrew and is region free.

Edit: Gamestop sells cubic ninja for $20 but comes down to about 15 after discounts if you use the infamous birthday coupon.

You need one of these carts.
I recommend you CN for 2 reasons:
1-You don't need other 3DS to install the hacked save
2-Cheap price

SysNand backup is a backup of your console. If you brick your console then you can flash it back.

Rom dumping lets you extract the rom file from an actual cartridge

Only MT-card supports cheats and it's a clone of gateway.
I kinda wish people would stop mentioning MT's rather pathetic excuse for a cheat system, there is like 12 games in their super epic list and 90% of them are Japanese! where as gateway can do rom mods that are just as effective if not more so, share saves if you really want max money and stuff like that (that's all the MT "cheats" offer anyway) or there is the spider ARCodes which also work with gateway, save decryption and editing via SDF, gateway has plenty of routes to cheat if that's what your into :p........not to mention he is planning to get a n3ds........MT doesn't work on the n3ds regardless

Using a Sky3ds here on current firmware 9.6.0.24

GW would have been nice for eShop -- I'd like some VC, but overall Sky has worked out for me -- and was the only option since I'd already updated.

Hummer v Porsche is the best analogy yet :gba:

MT-card offers cheats and that's all I know. Didn't know they were that bad

Power Saves are definately the way to go if you like cheating

Well even power saves is limited to save hacks, but yeah the cheats on MT by all accounts are buggy as hell and a pain to use and features cheats for like 5 EU/us games and about 15 for Japanese games......most of which are just duplicates between each region so for example NSMB would be 3/20 max supported games, it's really not worth mentioning, but depending on what he wants and if he buys his games legit NTR is quite promising in offering nearly the same level of cheat support as gateway with rom hacks, save dumping etc......it's like gateway but for retail carts

What's a power save? I just want 99 materials on Monster hunter since my nephew accidentally deleted my char. :/ all that work for nothing.

Action replay that works for 3ds games. It's a bit different then the original ARs though.

So, would you reccomend SKY3DS or Gateway darkomen64

Just ask yourself what you want to do.

Do you want to play eshop games?
Do you want Hombrew?
Do you want Region Free?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then your answer is Gateway. If you answered no to all of these questions then your answer is sky3ds

Do they both work for the New3DSXL?
