You might be the one to ask since deadlyfoez is quiet. Can you read the emmc? Can you write it back to the Wii U? Would you consider trying to play and see if downgrading is a possibility? Read a version, update, then try to revert using your first read? This could be a huge contribution and a safety net to people like me. I am already on 5.3.2 but blocked my Wii U mac address. I'm probably screwed already.

Unless people publish a way to allow me to downgrade. If downgrading is possible and "signing" a firmware to work is possible (for example, the Xbox 360).

Honestly, I haven't even looked at that. I'll take a look at this over holiday. I probably don't have the required skill to something like this, I'm a hobbyist, not a computer engineer but I can at least do some research.

you can Google emmc r3ading. Like the ps3 and latter 360 models. On Wiiubrew I think, there was more info. I have one Wii U and the wife would kill me. You can look at the 3ds for reference also. Those who would know are quiet. Happy holidays to you, nwplayer, and others.

Please do not attempt this unless you can backup ALL of these (this is off the top of my head):
WiiU/vWII NAND 1GB 2 @ 512MB banks
EMMC 8GB or 32 GB
serial flash for DRH
serial flash for DRC
If only 1 of those won't play nice(because of conflicting firmwares), they could corrupt the other 3.

any external storage attached to Wii U
there maybe even be a memory chip tried to the display cpu. etc.

Don't worry, I won't do this unless I have some reasonable understanding of the risk involved. Just because I have that many Wii U's laying around doesn't mean I intend to destroy one in some crazy attempt to be something I'm not ( A Hardware Hacker). I bought them and fixed them because they were all ridiculously cheap and I felt confident in my ability to repair them, not to attempt things beyond my ability.

Not a persistent one though, you'd still need to run a usermode exploit each time to run it, much like with the 3DS's ninjhax hbmenu.

To install a custom title, is an IOSU exploit needed or is a kernel exploit enough?

none of the above. First you need to figure out how to get a program to load in the first place, the Wii U checks the program to see if it's valid when it's installed and every time it's booted. If you can't do that then it's useless.

Not as far as I know, it doesn't allow access to switching games/programs, that's all IOSU level stuff.
But with a kernel exploit alone we're able to patch the ram on-the-fly. I believe whats patchable is limited though (correct me if im wrong here), but maybe we could patch the region info in ram without breaking the games signature, or maybe im way off in left field somewhere. Just a thought...

They won't unless we update the Webkit exploit with new bugs or find a way to modify updates :P
But would an IOSU exploit allow for firmware spoofing?

Also what are your thoughts on removing update partitions from isos (like on the wii). Of course theres no way to run isos right now but looking ahead i mean. If one has both the wii u common key AND the games title key, in theory do you think it would be possible to simply decrypt an iso, remove the update partition and resign it?

Perhaps there's a failsafe in place to prevent that idk
