Your experience with Tablets?

That thread does fit nowhere but here. At least Tablets are no consoles to me. Right?

I'm about to buy a Tablet. In the first place I wanted an Ebook - but they're all black-and-white - no color! Yes, that shocked me. (You might ask what I want the color for in an ebook. Good point. I want to see the covers of my books in color, simple as that.) So I came to the thought of buying a Tablet that can function as an Ebook and many things more I don't really need, but use eventually.

Whats really important to me:

- A simple and easy connection to my computer to convert files like mostly books, music and even maybe films (Tried an iPad and was shocked how restricted this whole thing is, or is that normal?)
- The support of the most established file types mentioned in the media above
- Enough free space to put all the things on it

..and I think that's it already. I don't want to play games or go to the internet, maybe check my mails or something, but that would be it. I don't need any fancy apps, maybe a clock to wake me up.

Do you own a Tablet? How did you decide which one to get? What can you recommend?

I bought my first tablet about 3 months back. A relatively cheap 10" one (asus ME102A for 200€), mostly to mess around with android. Gotta say that I was impressed with how good everything worked (I originally thought of getting a nexus shield tablet for nearly twice the money, but couldn't be assed to wait until it became available).
It's not the fastest and has some loading times when switching apps, but if you're sticking to one thing it's just great.

I'm not too familiar with apple, but I haven't done any converting whatsoever. I use MX player for movies, ebookdroid for books and text, and rocket player for music; you can connect it to your PC and just use it as a large USB drive.

Gotta say that if you REALLY aren't going to be using it for anything but reading, you should consider getting an ebook. Electronic ink can hardly be compared to a screen. For one, battery time is so much better on an ebook that it's ridiculous. It's much smoother to read on the eyes and (unlike a tablet) can be read even in direct sunlight. And since most ebooks are just text, they're not using color anyway (both on tablet and on ebook, you'll hardly be looking at the cover to begin with). And of course ereaders are cheaper.
But hey...I admit that if I had to choose, I'd go with the tablet as well. An alarm clock, mail program, sudoku...even if you only use a small handful of apps, you'll get better mileage out of it. And a tablet is better if you plan on reading comic books or magazines in electronic form.

I own a Nvidia Shield, and I love the fricken thing. Awesome music quality, vibrant screen, amazing emulation capability (it is a gaming tablet after all), stylus for great art apps, decent battery life, and at $299, it was perfectly affordable.
Granted you dont want any of the crazy extra features, for you I would recommend a Kindle Fire or something. Kindle Fire's work wonderfully for e-reading and other basic functions, and theyre really affordable as well.

Or hell, if you still dont mind a basic black and white experience, there are plenty of other Kindle Offers for you to choose from.

so most likely android, it more or less supports everything depending on which app you use and is simple drag and drop onto device memory, no using apps to convert crap first

Moon+ Reader for ebooks
MX Player for videos

now your size preference I dont know (7-10")
but nexus 7 will pretty much do everything and is failry cheap

If you just want an eReader, grab any Android tablet. Much more open than iPads are for file transfers and stuff.

IMO, the Amazon Kindle/Fire (whatever they call them now ) products actually make for great eReaders, since they're cheap for the most part and they use a simpler UI. Only problem is no micro SD card slot, but they generally have enough storage for a ton of books and movies and such.

The Nexus products are also excellent and well price tablets, and offer a lot more features than the Kindle/Fire line does (though also lacks SD card slot). I'd agree with Joe's recommendation of the Nexus 7 (as long as you get the second gen one's), it's an excellent 7" tablet that will do everything you want.

I bought a Nexus 7 in 2012 and I remember debating over if I should get the 7" version or get Samsung's 10" Nexus tablet. Really glad I went for the 7" version because it's small and light but has a big enough screen to read all my manga on it. I do like how it can play most movies without conversions. The only movies that gave me trouble are 1080p MKV bluray rips where pixelation does occur a lot but for all other video types, the MX Player plays them without a hitch. In fact, unlike the iPad, it really is as simple as drag and dropping any files to the tablet without the need to install other software.

no MSD is kind of a deal breaker for me
both are getting on in age i really hope that evga will make a tegra note 2 with a a k1 or newer processor if nvidia release a new chip
hopefully with a better build quality , to me all the tablets have kind of a shit build quality , especially samsung their tablets feel like flimsy plastic crap
i would like to see a high end android tablet with the build quality of an ipad /ipad mini ,aluminum construction , and stereo speaker design of the tegra note/nvidia shield
the new nokia android tablet looks like an ipad min clone aluminum construction , but no stereo speakers

Samsung Galaxy Tab kicks ass and chews gum for a very reasonable price. Long battery life, no Apple nonsense, and from my Tab 2 I can say it doesn't deteriorate like an iPad does. Just bought a Tab 4 during Black Friday and it's just as good as the 2, only with more RAM and even more battery (seriously I can get 24 hours of reading out of single charge).

yes i did mean that, i read some place it didnt have a MSD and only came in 32 and 64 gb models
so is the sytlus just a stylus or is it a partial digitizer? i think the tegra note has partial digiter , forget how many levels of pressure sensitivity

Nope, it definitely has one. Got a 32GB one in mine right now

As for the stylus, AFAIK it uses the same Direct Stylus tech the Tegra does (I think it uses a second gen version actually).

Get yourself an Android tablet. Much easier to drag and drop. I got a Dell Venue 8 and I love it. You can get an Ipad but you'll need to get an app for video (I use AV player on my Iphone), connect it to itunes, and drag the movie into the app via itunes . For Android, just drag and drop in micro SD (assuming it has a slot) and put it in Android.

The default video player is ok, but get MX player. Plays just about everything.

For books, there are a bunch of apps to chose from. Experiment and see which one you like. You can also upload like 1000 books onto your google account for free and access them through google books (or whatever it's called)

All in all, Android is definitely cheaper than Apple. Apps stores are nearly identical when it comes to the AAA apps. Google Nexus tablet is good but no SD slot. I think Samsung tablets have some bloatware you can't get rid off, but it's still good none the less. Dell Venue is good for the price. Amazon Fire is good as well (I believe you can root it to access the Google Play store)

Get a good android tablet, the cheap crapy one are what you pay for! Android is a great platform, open source and easy to make apps! Then put Cyanogenmod on top of that and you can not lose.

I find that if you want to game on one, there are not that many games that support gamepads. But getting a keyboard and mouse for text editing is a great choice.

(I hope Cycada comes out soon, ios apps on Android!)

Can't really say it's a tablet but I own a UMPC.
As for ebooks, I read them in cbr format and use Perfect viewer on me phone and CDisplayEX on me UMPC/lappy for it

Oh man, I love tablets. Even though I have a phone and PC, I just love the fact that I have a device that's decently powerful (Nexus 7) and dedicated to nothing but reading and games as opposed to making phone calls and texting.

if you are looking for drawing tablets, why not consider the 1st gen note 10.1?
you should be able to pick up a refurb one for $150-200
has the s-pen and the tablet uses wacom technology for precision, alot better then the tegra note which tries to emulate it
has microsd slot
has 2 front facing speakers
granted though it is showing its age spec wise but I havnt really seen any problems (yet) so if you want a higher spec, the second gen it out there which has a lot better specs

I have a Windows 8.1 Tablet (Windows 8.1 the same PC runs, not the "RT" version that is a sh*t). It works perfectly! Its like a Tablet PC! All Windows programs and the "metro menú" apps in one device. Really good, I dont like Android
It has 4Gb ram and 32Gb SSD, I expanded the storage with a 64Gb SD and works perfectly.

thanks i already have vaio flip with ntrig , not as good as wacom , just was wondering what nvidia/evga was offering ,didnt know samsung used wacom
but still i think i will wait maybe the shield will go on sale, also samsung build quality is crap aesthetically looks like shit and feels plastic-y and flimsy as hell
