Hardware Bricked New 3DS (JP)

So I went and bought a New 3DS this evening to update it just before the new update that is speculated to come tomorrow would come (I was hoping to be able to use Gateway with it). But it froze at the point where it asked me for my birthday after which I force resetted it. It no longer gets past "3Dスクリーン確認" (3D screen confirmation). No matter how I slide the 3D slider it won't let me go past this screen, the buttons on the touchscreen and the normal buttons do nothing. The home button only shows me the icon indicating I can't go to the homescreen.

So I guess I'm either facing a dead NAND or a broken 3D slider here...

This is a common problem with the old 3DS consoles. I've never actually seen a New 3DS in person, so I don't know if it's caused by the same issue, but commonly when the speaker cable is slightly loose or damaged old 3DS consoles get stuck on the 3D screen check part of the setup process. On the normal 3DS though this problem doesn't prevent the touch screen from working. You can still click "Next", but you'll just get a popup asking you again to raise the 3D slider to maximum and you won't be able to progress.

Since you just bought it, I'd suggest returning it to the store for a refund or exchange. For what it's worth though, I've seen this problem sometimes spontaneously resolve itself by letting the console sit there for a half hour or so on that screen. Usually the speaker cable does need to be reseated or replaced, but on a few occasions I've been surprised to see the console progress to the next step of setup on its own after I left it alone and came back later.

So today I tried again and it spontaneously worked. Until the Wi-Fi testing screen that is... it got stuck after it failed to connect and was about to show me the connection error... Buttons wouldn't do anything

EDIT: Just great. Now the new update came... My hopes of having an eventually region free New3DS crushed . Unless somebody discovers a game with 9.0 - 9.2 on it...

I hope they allow refunds, I guess I'll just be getting an AUS unit instead.

It comes with 8.1 like all Japanese units. I just went to a close-by AEON and bought it in person.

I actually managed to get past that screen now and am in the Home Menu. But it scrolls frantically. It would appear the C-stick is broken and it's constantly pushing in one direction. Also all buttons except the C-stick gives no response. I was able to briefly play SSMB.

So it wasn't bricked so much as defective controls... Although I don't know what to do now that 9.3 is out... Should I get a refund for this PoC and import an AUS unit?

Although I would still have some use for a legitimate JP system seeing as how I forgot to update Pokemon Y to 1.3 on my 9.2 ninjhax unit (regular old 3DS small) that I've decided to keep around for homebrew purposes.

It is expensive for a hobby being a university student living only on student loans in a foreign country, yes thank you. Take that condescending tone somewhere else.

At least I'll have a better wage than you when I graduate.

Just from the people posting on the forums here I'd say the LL is just getting bought fast enough for them to be moving into the 9.x inventory as all the firstborn systems get bought up. I'd say reports of 9.x standards will start trickling in before the weeks over. But I guess that's all speculation/educated guessing until proof rolls in.

As far as a use for legit new3ds, I would totally buy one just for sm4sh and mh4 when it hits the west.

So I returned the faulty unit for a refund and will wait and see how the homebrew situation pans out, although with Gateway announcing they are working on support for lower than 9.0 firmwares it might just be worth buying a JP unit again. Or I'll just wait until 9.1 units are more common or something.

In the worst case I'll probably be buying a N3DS for OFW and just use my old JP 3DS for homebrew (currently 9.2, got e-shop CN just before it dissappeared from the e-shop), but I kinda want to play around with the hardware in a N3DS writing homebrew for it... NFC readers and stuff are fun to play with.

I've lived here for "a while" (bout 3 years). I can see how you might think that the prices in the West are insanely expensive at the present. But it wasn't that long ago when the yen was at 75 for the dollar. During those days, prices of game and consoles were a good 25% more expensive than the US and similar to the more expensive countries Europe. Can't comment about Australia, almost everything (especially electronics) is expensive over there as far as I know. So rather than think that prices in the West are insanely expensive, I think that prices in Japan have gotten so cheap that I might just take a second look at games and consoles here

Yeah, the weak yen makes the costs of importing consoles, games, well, anything seem expensive now.. but this is easily made up by the much cheaper cost of living. No student living on loans can go on huge spending spree, but trust me, those are pretty good times for foreign students

If you bought an used one, those problems should have been listed when you bought it (I bought a japanese 3DS with a defective cart slot but it was written on it, and as I know I could easily make it fixed, which I did, it wasn't a problem at all) and if they weren't, just show those problems to the store and ask for a refund/exchange.

Gateway just said they will work on making their new exploit works on older firmwares, so I assume they talk about 8.x.

Except if you really want a New 3DS, you can probably find a 3DS 4.5 for cheap in Japan. I got mine for less than 80 dollars (if you add the cart slot cost replacement, it make less than 100 dollars) on Yahoo Auctions which is pretty cheap as 4.5 start to become more rare.

New 3DS isn't really useful in my opinion, no to mention we don't even know if exclusive games will work with the gateway.

Nintendo just released this new version because of the patent violation of Seijiro Tomita, that's also why they also released the 2DS in the west before the 3DS (the easiest/quickest way to fix the problem was just to remove the 3D). And they probably added the "c-stick" just to make people believe the new version was really planned and not just a quick fix for the patent.

The guy got roughly one dollar for each 3DS sold, so approximatively 30 millions of dollars, and I suppose Nintendo also had to pay for further sells, which is why the 2DS/New 3DS reelases were required (avoiding the patent use and so, they don't have to still give money to him for the upcoming 3DS sells).

Naw man, it was brand new bought-in-store, New Nintendo 3DS. It's been out for such a short while there is hardly any used market either...
Also New 3DS is useful if only for the screen improvements (the screen, even in 2D mode, is a whole level above the normal 3DS one) and integrated extra stick + extra shoulder buttons (useful for monster hunter, no longer having to lug around the CPP).

I already have a 9.2 regular 3DS JP with ninjhax so I can always use Gateway on that. If GW turns out without emunand I'll probably be grabbing a N3DS for OFW purposes only.

So just ask for an exchange, because it should not be broken that badly if it was sold as a brand-new one.

About the screen, the 2Ds screen is probably the same as it looks far better than original/XL 3DS.

C-stick don't really appeal me, I'm not really a Monster Hunter player.

But I can understand that people buying it as a first 3DS choose the New 3DS one, would be silly to buy an old model at near the same price.
