I agree with the theory that Gateway has kernel access on 9.x and just released the news because they were threatened by SKY3DS. They probably were going to wait until it was closer to release until they announced it, but sky3ds came out and they had to take action. I think the reason why they told 4.5 users to not update is so they don't have wait until they finally release the 9.x update.

Yeah, tthere are 2 possible scenarios:

They just made a vague announcement because they have the concept for something big but nothing actually ready for use. So they just let the word out there to stop people from buying Sky3DS while they work on it.

OR

They're just adapting Sky3DS's cart exploit for working on the red cart.

In order to believe that they're working on something functional, I'd rather believe they've been developing this for quite some time now, and dropped the bomb days after Sky3DS releases.

Good theory though. A bit hard to swallow if they came out saying: Nope, we can't 9.x afterall, sorry folks.

Sky3ds doesn't use any exploits.
And frankly I wouldn't count on it that they would make an announcement like that just for show. They have hinted numerous times they have something big coming so this may as well be it.

Of course they exploit a loophole in the cartridge reading process. The 3DS won't load any thing you throw at it. By your logic DS flash carts don't abuse any exploit either.

I partly agree w/ the suspicion that GW has a kernel exploit on 9.x, I don't think their announcement is so conspiracy theory though. You have the chance to update to the current version now and once a new OTA update goes live you may never have another and the next update may fix their entry point. There is currently no game w/ 9.x on it in NA, right? Didn't ORAS come w/ 8.x? It could be that we may never see a cartridge w/ the new exploitable firmware. So how does someone get on 9.x in NA then? UPDATE NOW AND STAY THERE!

Really?!? Why do people read so much more in to that announcement than what Occam's Razor should tell you? The simple and obvious answer is in the above paragraph.

I can't imagine GW being afraid of Sky3DS. If I have a 4.x 3DS (and I do), there is no way I would chose a Sky3DS over GW/MT/etc. If I don't have a 4.x, than a GW/etc isn't (wasn't) and option anyway, so it's(was) Sky or nothing. Why would the Sky3DS threaten GW in anyway if they couldn't get beyond 4.5? And it's not like a GW user has a compelling reason to update past 4.5... Where is the threat?

Yes, gateway has full kernel access, secure boot chain is broken, TWL_FIRM is fixed, they have a Wii U and PS3 emulator, and can even upgrade your 3ds to the new 3ds with no extra hardware!
