I have a question regarding DLC.

I have two 3ds systems, the first 3ds system is on the current OFW (9.0.whatever) and I have DLC (coin rush worlds) for New Super Mario Bros 2. on it that I purchased from the Eshop.

My second 3ds is on FW 4.1 and I have Gateway.

Question 1.

Is it possible to get the DLC to work on the second 3ds? I have of course the original NSMB2 cartridge and understand that it is possible to make a backup of this cart on the second 3ds system using GW but can not fathom how to get the DLC to transfer (if this is at all possible) as I guess it is saved on the SD card (the SD card in the side of the console) in the first 3ds system??

Question 2.

If this is not possible, is the work around, so to say, to do a 3ds system transfer from the first console to the second to migrate the DLC (im pretty sure this would work) but then would I be stuck with the DLC on the second 3ds system? My aim would be to be able to have the DLC on both systems.

I do use the first system to connect online and use the Eshop, the second system is setup not to connect to the internet.

I know you cant simply copy DLC from system to another as its locked to the system it was purchased on, but now that gateway is there, I wondered if it is somehow possible. I'm expecting the answer to be no to this issue, but I thought it doesn't hurt to ask :D

set up emuNAND on your gateway 3DS (look up how it is done), then update the emuNAND (look up how this is done), do a system transfer from your other 3DS on sysNAND 9.X to your gateway 3DS 9.X emuNAND (look up how it is done)
then I think you have to wait 1 or 2 days to do another system transfer
make a backup of your 9.X emuNAND with the transfered titles on it
make a system transfer from the 9.X emuNAND 3DS to the 9.X sysNAND 3DS, now inject the 9.X emuNAND backup with the transferred titles back to the 9.X emuNAND 3DS with "emunand_tool" (look up how it is done)
now you have the titles on both the 9.X sysNAND 3DS and the 9.X emuNAND 3DS, don't go to eshop with the Gateway 3DS, this will delete your tickets and make the titles unplayable, but you can inject the emuNAND backup again, if you accidentaly had them deleted
referring to all kind of DLC or eshop purchases as "titles" here
there are tutorials for all those steps on this board, I will not search and link every single one for you, you now know, what to search, you can search it yourself

if you don't want to do system transfers, you can buy DLC and eshop titles on your 9.X emuNAND Gateway 3DS and they will be usable, but if you already purchased it and don't want to buy it again, system transfer is what you want

also, before you do anything at all with your 4.X Gateway 3DS, make a NAND backup and store it somewhere safe

hope I could help, have a nice day

That's a great help thanks!

Yes I have been reading most of those guides and will give it ago. When you say make a NAND backup of the gateway 3ds I presume you mean the original sysNAND?

Thanks again :)

yes exactly, that one
it is very important, that everyone, who has a 4.X 3DS console, makes a backup of the NAND, you don't even need a 3DS flashcard for it, just a normal DS flashcard to install the Gateway exploit and an older Gateway firmware, which doesn't require the red Gateway card to boot
so whenever something does go wrong and you end up with an updated or corrupted sysNAND, you can still use your last trump card and install a hardware mod (or pay someone to do so) to flash back the old backup

you say "whenever something does go wrong" as if its a regular thing that randomly happens :P....as long as you stick to the guides and set it all up correctly you should never actually need that backup.....but its just a safety net for should something go wrong at any point

yeah, I basically try to say it as often as possible... you know, better scare people off, so they actually MAKE that backup than have them think nothing can ever happen, so why would I need to have it? :P
I DO start to get annoyed at myself for repeating this over and over again, but if it just helps 1 person at some point, then it was worth it

Good morning,

Just to update incase other people are considering doing this, I can confirm this worked very well. The only problem I ran into was inserting the SD card from the original system to the system with emunand for transferring DSiware, the process broke. But I just powered down and reentered emunand and was at the same step, so I said no to the DSiware transfer and just redownloaded what I purchased from the eshop. Everything else went without a hitch.

I have purchased smash bros from the eshop on the emunand and it plays flawlessly.

I have also created a second SD card using the format gateway process and re-injected the emunand and copying all the files from the viewable partition (from the original SD card with emunand) across and everything works ok. So I have two SD cards for the same system both with the same emunand and folders and files that are viewable on the sd card. (btw I had to use long path pro to copy the nintendo 3ds folder as an error of file path being too long occurred"

However, my smash bros save file does not appear to want to load and displays the following message: "Unable to use this save data as it is not the latest data. Would you like to create new save data?"

The only difference between the sd card I started with which works and the second SD card that is a backup of the first, is that I formatted the second SD card to use a cluster size of 64kb for faster load times. But I do not see how this could be the problem... (info: changing from a 32kb cluster to a 64kb cluster had the following consequences: booting emunand time decreased from 14.17 secs to 13.34 secs, and loading smash bros from the SD Card (purchased downloaded version) decreased from 26.34 secs to 24.93 secs. Not much faster, just over a second quicker. Downside is obviously that one loses some file space, for me it was only 30MB, so make of that what you will if you are or were thinking about this :) )

I understand that gateway is going to release an update soon so that save files retrieved from cartridges can be used, due to file sizing problem that some save files retrieved are a different size to the 512kb that gateway creates and whatever else.... . But seeing as smash bros was purchased from the eshop and created the save file itself, I'm not too sure why I am getting this error message.

If anyone could enlighten me, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

Just as an extra note, my backed up save of mario tennis open works on both the sd card that has a 32kb cluster and the one with the 64kb cluster when my backed up cartridge version of the game is booted from gateway.
