As many of you may remember, Microsoft has done quite a bit with the Kinect and its possibilities with usage in development activities on the PC side. With the release of Kinect v2.0, the option of plug and play with the PC was impossible due to the propriety connector use on the Xbox One for both transferring data as well as charging the device itself.. Microsoft even went as far as to say that the Xbox One version of the Kinect will not see a PC option in the future. Well, luckily this has changed as Microsoft has released a Xbox One Kinect adapter for the PC ($49.99). On top of the adapter, Microsoft also released the v 2.0 of the SDK as well as adding Kinect Apps category in the Windows Store.

Microsoft sure loves selling ridiculously expensive adapters for shit that probably shouldn't have needed one in the first place.
oh well, cheaper than buying a new Kinect I guess.

"The Wii U version of Smash Bros. will be playable with GameCube controllers"
Whelp Nintendo, take all my money. I will gladly pay to use my gamecube controller with the new smash bros.
The Nintendo 360 controller would be fine, but it's still a new controller. I'm much happier with my familiar layout and feel of the gamecube controller.

EDIT: Oh and i'd like to point out that there's very, very little chance the adapter will cost more than 1 WiiU 360 controller. WiiU has no gaems, I don't need a controller for no gaems. So i'll buy the much cheaper adapter that lets me and my 4 gamecube controllers play the new Smash Bros instead of buying 4 Wii60 controllers. Mad savings.

Nintendo is giving backwards compatibility for controllers that are two generations old and in no way designed to work with a console that works with entirely wireless controllers. Also this adapter connecting up to 4 controllers is a modest $19.99. On top of that, it's only for those of us blinded by nostalgia. Really the Wii60 pad would be fine for smash I imagine. There are options, no one is forced to buy it. That's a big difference compared to MS saying "Buy this or you're shit out of luck, oh and by the way it's $50"
You're absolutely out of your mind if you think that's similar to giving the Kinect an unconventional hookup when PC compatibility has been on the table since most likely before the kinect 2.0. They've been talking about it for ages. Even if it required this special hookup, and hey it may i'm no hardware engineer, the cost of the adapter should never in a million years be priced at $50. That's ludicrously overpriced. They're probably making almost 90% profit off of that thing.
If you look at some other things MS sells, you'd see what I mean. Most adapters microsoft sells are absurdly priced and not meant to be a convenience to the customer, but rather another way to nickel and dime some cash out of them. Funny enough i'm sure Nintendo has things like that too, you just happened to try be a smart ass about the absolute worst item they've sold.

Nintendo's GC controller adapter is basically a courtesy to all the veteran fans who have played the previous two generations of Smash on a GC controller. They could've charged $50 too and I guarantee it would've sold just as many units. I'm not on Nintendo's side too often these days but I think this is a DAMN fine gesture towards their older, dedicated fanbase.

This is a rhetorical question...but, do you even think before you post? It really seems like you don't. I wouldn't need to waste 5 minutes of my life typing this up if you'd just turn on the ol' brain of yours and not make an ass of yourself.
But hey at least when all you do is quote things, it's possible to understand what the fuck you're saying for once.

Wow, I see to have sparked a wild flame, possibly with a side of pent up aggression, let us stoke it.

"for shit that probably shouldn't have needed one in the first place."

You mean like designing a console with a controller/controllers that is beaten by another console, one that they also designed, that is over a decade old, and one that had to come and save their arses (at least in the farce that is smash fandom a lot of the time) the last time around?
There is a logic in the design world that reads very similar to the old woodworking/machinists phrase "measure twice, cut once", of if you prefer "get it right the first time, and if you screw up don't repeat the mistake".

"and in no way designed to work with a console that works with entirely wireless controllers."
I think are approaching this design lark from the wrong direction.

"Nintendo's GC controller adapter is basically a courtesy to all the veteran fans who have played the previous two generations of Smash on a GC controller."
You know what would have also worked, and indeed been preferable? For them to make a suitable controller, you might get some whine somewhere but generally "Does it work for the task at hand? Yes, then it plays" is what you want to aim for.

Should MS have whacked a USB port (or three if the motor, IR and normal camera needed different ones) and some kind of remotely standard power hookup. Absolutely, though fixing pointless/"dodges a patent and is 5% better in some made up study" custom/proprietary ports and plugs is a decent chunk of what I do I would be happy to see the back of it.

Flame on.

The irony is that kinect is and probably always has been way more useful in a business environment (voice-to-text transcribing, interactive powerpoint, that sort of things) than in games (Christ...is there even a half-decent kinect game on any xconsole?).

However, they're pretty much throwing all unneeded obstacles at it to make DAMN SURE THAT THIS WILL FAIL!!! Needs windows 8: check. Needs overexpensive adapter: check. Needs USB 3.0: check.

I just pity any programmer being forced to create a program using the kinect. No matter how splendid job that person does, it won't sell anything because nobody will be using it (and let's not get into the rumour territory of the damn thing uploading everything straight to NSA servers. Even if that turns out to be completely bogus, the thought will prevent quite some PC users from ever connecting a kinect).

Every article on the kinectv1 for PC referred to it as a 'hack'
The v2 has been given to half teh xbone's install base and there is literally 1 game that uses it extensively.
I don't see the v2 having a life at all on the xbone, let alone on the PC.
