Don't know what happened. I power on my 3DS XL to download the new update. (because I hear you can make your home screen black now!) So I plug it in, start the update, but a few minutes later I notice the system is off. I power it on, connect to the eshop, it says update available. So the update didn't install successfully? I decide to fully charge the system and try again. So i fully charge it, but when I turn on the system afterwards, a few second later it powers off on its own!

Now when i power it on it won't even work. If I tilt the system and squint I can see the home screen. So I guess the backlight is out. However, I notice that pressing the dpad or the screen doesn't do anything. So the system is frozen. There are also bars vertically across the screen. But not anymore. Now when I power on the system I don't see anything, but I can tell the screen is on. Its on but completely black.

I don't know what happened to cause this. I didn't do anything to the system recently except switch battery. (I bought a replacement battery from Nintendo) But switching back to the old battery doesn't help. Another possibility is that the weather is getting colder and maybe that had something to do with it. Or maybe I did download the system update and that caused it somehow.

Long story short I'm wondering if I should buy a replacement screen. Would that solve the problem?

The sound works!! The system seems to work a-okay, its only the the screen that is borked. I was even able to boot up Mr. Driller simply by using audio cues to guess which home menu icon I was selecting.

Also, the screen does work sorta, but you only see ghosting from stuff that happens like 20 seconds ago. It's also really dark. I first noticed this when I was tinkering in the home menu and noticed that the image frozen onto the screen was different from before. And when I started Mr Driller, I sat at the title screen for a few seconds and it started to gradually fade in.

So is the problem the screen or corrupted system files?
I should replace the screen, right? dealextreme has two screen listed, which one should I get?

I was probably wrong, could be a screen problem if games work. Can't tell you about replacing it though.

It's so spooky! One menu fades into the next. This is one messed up screen!

edit: lol, it looks like a Game Boy Color.

Hold on. How are you using the 3DS without a top screen? I thought it wouldn't power on without that.
It certainly looks like the screen is broken, I don't see any way that could happen from a borked firmware update. In general all that happens if an update is interrupted partway through is that you end up with a partially updated firmware where some things are updated and others aren't (but it still works fine), or it can brick if you're unlucky, but the peculiar behavior of the screen (like fading) isn't something that could be caused by that, I think.
I was about to ask you to contact Nintendo until I saw half the 3DS was missing :P not much hope of getting them to fix that.

What makes me smile about this thread is the fact he says his 3DS is not working properly to begin with and his 3DS has no top half in the video and also to boot he has a special avatar photo of his prize 3DS with no top screen either! Did you even know a 3DS needed a top half? I'm just wondering??? :rofl2: Surely you must be trolling, please tell me you are!

Wait, check his profile. He explains the top screen missing thing. What I don't understand is why he didn't mention it till the video was up.
